Vredeborch Felica with Fomapan 400. Stand developed in Rodinal.

I captured this peaceful winter scene in a quiet forest near my home. The snow delicately covers the bare tree branches, creating a beautiful pattern against the pale sky. The serene moment feels incredibly calm, with the fresh air and gentle light adding to the peaceful atmosphere. It's a lovely reminder of the quiet beauty of nature in winter.

XA2 on Portra 400

Wonju, South Korea

from Duino Elegies (1923) by Rainer Maria Rilke

Tenth Elegy

How we squander our hours of pain.

How we gaze beyond them into the bitter duration

to see if they have an end. Though they are really

our winter-enduring foliage, our dark evergreen,

one season in our inner year--, not only a season

in time--, but are place and settlement, foundation and soil and home.

Die Zehnte Elegie

Wir, Vergeuder der Schmerzen.

Wie wir sie absehn voraus, in die traurige Dauer,

ob sie nicht enden vielleicht. Sie aber sind ja

unser winterwahriges Laub, unser dunkeles Sinngrun,

eine der Zeiten des heimlichen Jahres---, nicht nur

Zeit---, sind Stelle, Siedelung, Lager, Boden, Wohnort.

Yea Finger Rock is made of Connellsville Sandstone in the Conemaugh Group (per this map), from the late Pennsylvanian subperiod of the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era. It was formed 307.5 to 302.5 million years ago (per Macrostrat).

During my visit I honored Finger Rock by "giving it the finger" in the good way, not in the angry flipping-you-off sense.

True story! I carefully composed this picture so that the foreground tree about one-third of the way in from the right is blocking an unsightly handmade sign at the base of the cliff. It reads "This is sacred space."

A beautiful winter forest scene with a view from a mountain through snow-covered trees toward a lake below, framed by crisp blue sky that emphasizes the cold, frosty atmosphere.

This memory of this winter day is starting to get me feeling spirited about the prospect of the impending return of winter. My hopes are HIGH for another good winter this winter.

The ravine is doing the "dissecting" people talk about when they talk about dissected plateaus.

I can see why people get weirded out by Appalachian winters! I'd hate to have to think of somebody being discovered face-down in this dreadful ravine.

I wish I had exposures of limestone on my property instead of just a bunch of dirt. I do not want a creek because of the flood risk but I do want limestone.

Whoa the limestone is "Ames limestone" in the Conemaugh Group, from the late Pennsylvanian subperiod of the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era. Macrostrat says it formed 307.5 to 302.5 million years ago.

Winter Square B&W 3

Snow- and lichen-covered branches of an evergreen tree in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
