I've been a football fan since childhood, but I've been alienated from the top-flight game for years because of the obscene amounts of money involved and the dubious ownership and governance.
Luckily, "real football" can still be easily found in the "lower" leagues. Here we are at Morecambe FC's Mizuma Stadium before their home game against Forest Green Rovers in League One.
A 4,500 crowd, a high standard of soccer skill, and plenty of women, children, and families. A friendly atmosphere where supporters of both teams can mix. A modern stadium, capacity 6,476 with safe standing if you want, half-time Bovril, and affordable!
Yes, Morecambe are struggling as a team right now - but they are not alone - all the more reason to go along.
By the way, a decent game (a relegation battle) finished 1-1.
Why not try it out where you live?

A lovely restaurant in the Gloucestershire town of Nailsworth which was converted from a 16th Century mill. I went here around 10-15 years ago with some friends and really enjoyed it. Maybe they will stage a big celebration party if local team Forest Green Rovers are promoted into the football league!
.. and they were!

Forest Green Rovers opened the gates at The Bolt New Lawn to fans today to watch a pre-season training session ahead of their historic League One debut on Saturday.

Strange name for a road but it seems appropriate as my team Bristol Rovers will be going other ways next season after their defeat yesterday sees them relegated from the Football League. A very miserable day for the team I have supported since I was ten. Forest Green Rovers in the Conference League are based in the Gloucestershire town of Nailsworth whose population of 6,600 is fewer that the attendance for that final Rovers match at the Memorial Stadium. That it should come to this!

Thanks to Forest Green Rovers Football Club for a fantastic welcome. (9th December, 2019)
Football clubs are more than just clubs, they are part of the social fabric that binds us together. They're too important to be left in the hands of bad owners.
Under Labour, supporters will have a real say over how their clubs are run.
