Located on John’s Island outside of Charleston, South Carolina, the Angel Oak is estimated to be upwards of 500 years old. This Southern live oak is frequently rumored to be among the oldest living trees east of the Mississippi.
Angel Oak is indeed awe-inspiring. Having survived numerous natural disasters over its lifetime, its many twisted branches are host to a variety of other flora, such as the ferns and lichens featured here.
Angel Oak Tree Park is owned and operated by the city of Charleston, and is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Parking and admission is free! Tempting though it may be however, climbing Angel Oak is strictly prohibited.
