Looking Glass Rock is a feature in the landscape I simply cannot pass by without stopping and appreciating. Surrounded by the cradle of forestry here in Western North Carolina, a cliff rises out of the forest, capturing light and projecting a deep mythic quality. You, for a moment, step out of the modern world and are cast back in time, beholding a true wonder of the natural world. Throw the clouds down around this majestic mountain, and you may find yourself transfixed by one of natures true beauties. This photo was taken just past sunrise in October of 2021, and perhaps one of my favorite images from the past year.

A pretty waterfall there in the north central part of Wyoming in the Bighorn National Forest. Captured there handheld at the slowest shutter speed I could get with the CPL filer on ... did not have the tripod with me at this time.

Lives in the high Andean cloud forest. Captured in Ecuador.

Captured with an old Kogaku 50mm f2.0 Nikkor-H lens on a Canon RP

I love the rendering of this lens. It also seems to focus beyond infinity, which can give interesting results

Though this isn't a dragonfly of the Black Forest ' captured this guy in the Black Forest...

💪💪 #mood_in_frame #the_mirror_of_our_souls #ig_shotz_trees #enchantedforest #naturebrilliance #raw_alltrees #earth_shotz #forest_masters #forest_captures #forest_magic #addicted_to_basque #tufotonatgeo #divine_forest #bestforestmood #sublimeshot #thebasquecountry #fstoppers #naturelove #euskalherria #total_nature_spain #total_nature_europe #sonyalpha #sonyphotography #sonya7iii #leofoto #tree_brilliance #tree_magic #splendid_woodlands #tree_of_darkness #ig_shotz_trees #earth_shotz #sonyalphasclub

Foggy Morning (film)

This typical english autumnal image in Twigmoor Woods, North Lincolnshire. My goal for the morning shoot was to capture some tree shots and undertake a scouting mission to find locations to come back later in the year when there is some snow on the ground. However, it goes to show that it pays to stop and look down every now and then.

I just had to capture this fallen silver birch tree. To me it looks like it is being engorged by the forest floor and the branches are like arms, desperately trying to heave the tree out of the impending doom.

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY is the topic from September 27 to October 3, 2025 Group Our Daily Challenge

---------------------------------

A quiet moment in Cologne's city forest, captured during the golden hour. The sun's rays penetrate the dense canopy and bathe the scene in an almost ethereal light. The tall trees appear like silent guardians, while the few people on the forest floor create a delicate connection between nature and humanity. This image was created deliberately and with intention—with the aim of capturing the magic of light and the tranquility of the forest as an artistic expression.

----------------------------

...was nothing.

A little detail from a local forest captured with MOG Oreston 50mm F1.8 lens.

“We’ll go to Dartmoor for the day,” we said. “It’ll be fun,” we agreed. “Let’s go to Nun’s Cross Farm and then head on down the road to Bellever.”

It seemed that a plan was in the making. An early(ish) start, a drive up to Tavistock for breakfast at a yet to be decided venue and then up onto the moors we’d go. And strangely, things were going in accordance with the blueprint for the day. We were at Morrison’s in Tavistock, filling up with the all day breakfast in the café and adding a few carefully chosen calorie boosting snacks for later. It’s a rather agreeable town; one of the small number I’ve found myself at total ease in. I could add Totnes and Clevedon to that list of places where the majority of the residents appear to lead a quiet yet happy existence, seemingly at peace with themselves. I’m probably wrong of course, and you’ll have your own favourites, but these are the towns where I feel as if I could slip into the neighbourhood and push my shopping trolley quietly around the local Morrison’s without being noticed. I’m rather fond of Abergavenny too for that matter. There’s something about the familiarity of the homely Aldi opposite the big car park and the chippy we almost always stop at after escaping the busy westbound M4 at Newport.

From the gentle streets of Tavistock we climbed out of town on the road towards Princetown, across a grey rainy landscape dotted with lone sheep and grazing ponies, passing the big car park at Pork Hill where the ice cream van that’s forever parked there wasn’t doing any business of note. From Princetown we’d take the long single track lane right to its end near the abandoned farm. Here we mostly sheltered from what was turning into incessant sheets of rain, breaking cover at appropriate intervals to drag a shot or two from the empty wilderness. It was nearly Christmas on a Monday afternoon and hardly another soul was seen. From here we moved on to Bellever, a forest captured so atmospherically by a number of you and a place neither of us had ever managed to visit before. We had a plan to walk up to Bellever Tor and breathe in the big vistas of Dartmoor at its most magnificent bleakness. But along the way we kept finding distractions to hamper our progress in the form of green mossy stone walls lurking in the shadows, put there to slow us down. A good thing perhaps, as we turned left instead of right and ended up on the wrong tor completely. “Do you think that’s Bellever Tor over there?” I asked, pointing towards the eminence on the other side of the forest. “Yes, I rather suspect it might be,” Lee responded as we quickly ditched all notion of heading up there before the end of the day. Getting here had been fun enough, and in retrospect we were probably better off where we’d ended up, photographically speaking at least. Ironically it seems we’d managed to find ourselves on top of Laughter Tor, although we hadn’t yet seen the funny side of it.

It's the sort of forest that lulls you into a world of old fairy tales. In fact, it wouldn’t have surprised me if a young girl had passed through here carrying a picnic basket, dressed from head to toe in red, pursued by a slavering wolf disguised as her grandmother; he in turn followed by a woodsman bearing a large axe. I wonder what Freud made of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm for that matter, but I can see why forests like this led them into the darker places of their imagination. No doubt it’s besieged with visitors during the busy season, but there’s an air of dank silence about the place on a winter afternoon when all the colours of the spectrum are reduced to just a handful of greens and browns. It was much more fun being here now, discovering dry stone walls clad in cloaks of bright damp moss. In this spot, not only the vibrant wall stood out among the darkness, but there was also an odd patch of bright light in the top left hand corner of the frame that appeared to bear no relation to where the weak winter sun was supposedly lurking behind the clouds. It seemed that the camera and lens were in unanimous protest at the conditions I‘d dragged them out into that day, and conspired to produce a washed out space that intensified the only patch of bright light under the trees. It was obviously going to be fun drying things off later. These modern cameras may be weather sealed, but I still felt like I was taking too many chances beneath the dripping conifers. A judicious crop would help me to rescue the image, yet for a time I was uncertain of it. In the end I decided it told the day’s story well, and I rather liked it.

It seems odd that we chose one of the shortest days of the year to drive for ninety minutes each way when there’s so much closer to home, but we were still happy we’d done something different for a change and visited somewhere new. Something that challenged us a bit. It was a relief to get into a warm car with heated seats for the journey home though. There are so many places on the moor to explore more fully, including the tor we’d failed to identify properly on the map. So many reasons to return then.

The Sooty Ant-Tanager (Habia gutturalis), photographed at The Lost City of Falan in Tolima, Colombia, presents a striking visual with its black plumage and vivid red crown and throat. Endemic to Colombia, this bird is a unique subject, often found in the understory of humid forests. Capturing this image at an elevation of 736 meters amidst dense foliage and low light conditions was challenging. The bird's perch on a branch against a lush green background creates a stunning contrast, with the soft, natural light highlighting its intricate feather details.

From a technical perspective, I used a shutter speed of 1/45 and an ISO of 3200 to manage the low light conditions. The f/16 aperture was necessary due to the use of an 800mm lens and a 1.4x extender, requiring precise focus and stability. This combination brought out the Sooty Ant-Tanager's distinctive coloration and elusive nature, making this photograph a testament to the meticulous effort required in wildlife photography. This image reflects my dedication to capturing and conserving the natural beauty of Colombia's biodiversity.

The Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys), photographed at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, embodies the dynamic beauty of the Andean cloud forests. Captured mid-flight while feeding on a vibrant magenta flower, the bird’s delicate speckled throat, muted green plumage, and subtle iridescent highlights stand out against a lush, softly blurred background. The vibrant colors of the flower and the bird’s fluttering wings create a striking balance between motion and tranquility, emphasizing the intricate beauty of this species in its natural habitat.

To capture this fleeting moment, I used the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens at 500mm. A shutter speed of 1/750 second allowed me to freeze the bird’s swift movements while still capturing the natural flow of its wingbeats. ISO 800 balanced the diffused forest light, ensuring clarity and preserving the rich details of the scene. Positioning and timing were crucial in showcasing the hummingbird’s grace while maintaining a composition that draws attention to the connection between the bird and its environment. This photograph highlights the challenge and reward of capturing such delicate creatures in their natural settings.
