Perca is the genus of fish referred to as perch or, sometimes, yellow perch, a group of freshwater fish belonging to the family Percidae. Perch, of which there are three species in different geographical areas, lend their name to a large order of vertebrates: the Perciformes, from the Greek perke meaning perch, and the Latin forma meaning shape.
Perch have "rough" or ctenoid scales. On the anterior side of the head are the maxilla and lower mandible for the mouth, a pair of nostrils, and two lidless eyes. On the posterior sides are the opercula, which are used to protect the gills. Also there is the lateral line system which is sensitive to vibrations in the water. They have a pair of pectoral and pelvic fins. On the anterior end of the fish, there are two dorsal fins. The first one is spiny and the second is soft. There is also an anal fin, which is also considered spiny, and a caudal fin. Also there is a cloacal opening right behind the anal fin. All perciform fish share the perch's general morphology.
The type species for this genus is the European perch.
Perch as a food fish
Perch are a popular panfish and are considered to be very good eating; the commercial catch for them has always been in high demand. This has also led to considerable misuse of the term "perch" in the restaurant business in the United States, such as "ocean perch" (Rosefish) and "rock perch" (a small bass). Many restaurants will strive to correctly advertise the offering as "yellow lake perch", or the slightly more ambiguous "lake perch". "White perch", though good eating, is a completely different species of panfish common in New England, and not a member of the order Perciformes.
Angling
They can be caught with a variety of methods, but the two best methods are perhaps float fishing and lure fishing. Spinners work exceptionally well. When Float Fishing, the angler will want to have a disgorger at all times; Perch are notorious for swallowing the hook, and will need aid of a disgorger or forceps for unhooking. In many parts of the world they are also a favorite species among ice fishermen. They will take a variety of baits, including minnows, worms, maggots, bread and softshell crayfish.
Perch grow to around 5 lb (2.3 kg) or more, but the most common fish to be caught are around 1 lb (0.45 kg) or less, and anything over 2 lb (0.91 kg) is considered a prize catch.

The museum curator, Jeanette, was very interested in Pop's identification of these forceps. A photo of Pop holding forceps was taken by the museum and Pop provided the following information to the museum.
The forceps are nickel plated, thus it is rusting due to water vapor sterilization, probably from the late1800’s to early 1900’s. I was unable to read the name of the manufacturer, but it is a #90, used to extract upper molars, especially wisdom teeth.
During the late 19th century, harder steels were made with alloys of chromium, tungsten, manganese and nickel (24).

This is the Holy Grail of blooms for me. A photo of this flower is what sparked my interest in pleurothallids. It is, without doubt, my favorite orchid flower.
The etymology for this plant is very interesting. The Latin word "forceps" means "claw or pincer". While the Latin word "cancri" means "cancer", it also means "crab", which is also the symbol for the zodiac sign "Cancer". The plant's common name, obviously, is the "Crab Claw Orchid". Thankfully, it isn't known as the "Cancer Orchid". :-)
This plant came from Tropical Orchid Farm in Maui, Hawaii. Although the plant comes from a cool environment, Colombia (2000m), it seems to adapt readily to intermediate temps. It reportedly grows very well in Hawaii.
Artery forceps used as hook removers. If I remember rightly, many nurses carried a pair of those in the top pocket of the uniform to defend themselves from the wandering hands of frustrated male patients.
And before you ask, the answers no! I haven't had them used on me, have dated several nurses over the years though.

A nice portrait of this species. The closely-related and almost identical Longnose butterflyfish - Forcipiger longirostris has a longer snout, smaller mouth, and has some dark on the forward thorax. That latter fish also has a dark brown phase, which is striking. 105mm Nikon lens, F10 at 1/160.

Fairford Church Windows
Text taken from 'St Mary's Church, Fairford, Gloucestershire'. 4th ed 2001. Revised by Geoff Hawkes and Kenneth Munn.
Since 1986 there has been a programme of restoration of the windows by the Barley Studio in York.
The twenty-eight windows have been used to express and teach by pictures the Christian faith for nearly 500 years. No other parish church in the land has retained a complete set of late medieval glass. The plan of these windows illustrated the Christian faith as in the pages of a picture book. Opposite to the twelve prophets, who foretold the faith, stand twelve apostles, each beneath a sentence of the Apostles' Creed, which expresses the faith. Four evangelists, who recorded the faith, are opposite four doctors of the Church, who expounded the faith. Above stand twelve martyrs, or confessors, who suffered for the faith; opposite are twelve enemies of the faith. Within the chancel screens is shown, in the Life of Christ, the foundation of our faith. In the bottom centre panel of the East window stands Our Lord being judged by Pilate. In the West Window is shown Christ judging the whole world.
1: white “repugnatory” glands being pressed by forceps.
2: pressed gland emitting secretion of viscid, slow-to disperse, white threads. Fretter and Graham (1962) assumed secretion was toxic and/or distasteful, but its precise nature is yet to be established.

messing around at work again. took a while to set this one up. at suggestion of a friend. i will explain the work that went inti setting this one up.
i first had to search for a metal rod that was long, straight and thin enough for the forceps to clamp onto.
i then located a box of old forceps. i knew they were around, just had to find them.
looked around for something to use as a black background.
then i had to figure out how i was going to get the rod to stick straight out at me.
i found a wire cart anf taped the black construction board to it. popped a hole on the constuction board and pushed the rod through.
once i had the rod and backdrop in place i started to clamp the forceps on to the rod spacing them an inch apart and spiraling them around the rod. it took about thirty clamps to get ti this. all in all it took me about an hour and a half to complete the set up.
