I adore these old phone numbers that included alpha characters such as Whitehall, Tuxedo, Neptune, Kellogg, Murray, Niagara, Parkview, Ulysses and so many more. This was what the phone company (THE phone company - AT&T) called the 2-5 numbering system. It consisted of an Area Code + Office Code + Station Number. A phone number assigned to this particular phone would include a three digit numerical area code, plus WH for Whitehall (only the first two letters of each word were used), plus a unique five digit number. Maybe I have a special nostalgia for this sort of thing because my grandmother was a long distance operator for AT&T in the ’50s. Or maybe I like to fool myself into thinking that it was a simpler time when these types of phone numbers were in use. Regardless, I still adore them.
