bow down and stare in wonder

oh how we love you

no flaws when you're pretending

but now i know she

never was and never will be

you don't know how you've betrayed me

and somehow you've got everybody fooled

without the mask where will you hide

can't find yourself lost in your lie

While out looking for photo opportunities this morning spotted this about a hundred yards away, believing it was a hawk on a guardrail with its chest toward me. I was interested in shooting such a thing for sure and slowly approached so as not to scare it away. Talk about feeling like the village idiot. On the plus side, the pumpkin was not spooked and held its pose for me to take a pic.

These plants were fooled by Toronto's surprising warm spells in February. Yesterday actually set a record for February 28th). Tomorrow we expect a significant amount of snow so I wonder what will happen to these plants. They may survive the same way they survived a snowfall last week. Hardy things, these Toronto plants.

Mary Magdalene

Hispano-Filipino

c. 1750-1815

Solid ivory image surrounded by a silver radiance known as a “Rafaga”.

Height of Ivory: 9 in; 13.5 in to top of crown; 17 in to top of radiance.

Overall Height w/ Base: 19.5”h.

This imposing figure is supposedly an ivory carving of the image of Mary Magdalene. But this is an intentional deception in that in this iconography, she is presented as if she were the Virgin Mary. She wears a silver crown. And her entire body is surrounded by a nimbus of light known as the “Rafaga”. At first blush, one is lead to believe that this is an image of the Virgin. And since the Rafaga is traditionally associated only with images of Christ or the Virgin, the addition of this feature was an intentional act to deceive.

According to the auction catalog, this image was formerly in the collection of a Connecticut gentleman and his wife who lived in Columbia for over a decade. This object was purchased from a friend who told him that the image was found in Cali and is reputed to have arrived at Buenaventura, Columbia from Acapulco sometime between 1665-1815.

However, a closer examination of the figure reveals the truth. This is not an image of the Virgin nor any of the Catholic saints. This is a standing image of the goddess Guan-Yin. On her right hand, she holds a rosary-like chaplet of beads but those are just Buddhist prayers beads and have no Catholic symbolism. On her left hand she is supposed to hold the “Holy Grail”. In actuality, she holds a Ruyi scepter, a ceremonial talisman in Chinese Buddhism symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore.

The dates provided are also irrelevant and misleading. The years between 1665 and 1815 span the entire period of the Manila Galleon trade. Anything and everything arrived in the New World from the East at this time! In other words, they are meaningless.

Although attributed to the Hispano-Filipino workshops, the carving style of the image is not consistent with Philippine carving of images of the Virgin or other female saints. The image wears a long robe which falls in lanky horizontal folds ending at the hem. Her toes do not peep through. She wears no mantle. The edges of the tunic are decorated with geometric designs unknown in Philippine iconography. The carving of the hair is wrong for this attribution. The eponymous “suksuk” or tuck is missing. And her lips are not painted with the trademark orange-red hue of Philippine made saints.

It’s amazing what a little bit of silver can do to fool the eye.

A drive through the English countryside during the early summer will result in a dazzling view of field after field of flowering Rapeseed, besides being bright, the yellow flowers also give off a sweet smell.

Rapeseed is grown for the production of animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption, and biodiesel

One advantage of going together on a trip with another photographers is that you can pick up a thing or two skills to add to your arsenal. This time I was schooled by some of my friends namely, Adri, Felix and Budiono about seascape. I learn about low angles, extreme composition and few other things.

This photo is taken with the camera literary few inches off the water surface. Big risk that you have to take to capture good photos. Was it fun? Yes. Will I do it again? Probably yes. Make sure that you clean your tripod afterward.

April 1, 2010

Happy April Fool's Day!

I wanted to do a prank like picture but...I couldn't think of anything. Even then I'm not much of a prankster. Danita and me pulled a prank on Patricia through text today but that was about it. :S

Not liking this one too much...my legs don't match my face lol I'm all VERY pale (and love it) but for some reason it looks like I have tights or something on my legs are sooo dark :(

That and the mask just doesn't looks right...waah.

Tomorrow begins easter break for me :) No classes tomorrow or Monday so...Danita and me will watch School Rumble all weekend! 20 hours worth of stuff :D woot!

TRF: The bunny came in a package my mom sent me for Easter...was full of food and candy and the bunny

April: April Fool! In the North Transept under the Five Sister Window, the 3D glasses and this story was left for visitors.

The enigma of the Five Sisters Window is revealed

The 13th Century grisaille window in the North Transept of York Minster, known as the Five Sisters window, has been an enigma for many centuries. At first glance it appears to be made up of a series of repeated geometric patterns, but purely by accident the secret of this window has been revealed.

Earlier this year a young family visited the Minster, having been to the cinema to see a film, which happened to be in 3D. The daughter was still wearing her 3D glasses as they entered and said to her parents “look at that!” Her parents thought she was amazed by the scale of the window, but as she kept telling her parents about the female figures they were mystified. It was only when they put on the glasses that they saw the same images that their daughter had seen.

(Stained and painted coloured glass plays optical tricks, often, when photographed, and especially on transparencies, certain colours – reds and blues can appear to be in 3D.)

Scientific research has shown that this is not just a chance happening, but was intended by the mediaeval glaziers, and the five sisters window was one of the largest optical illusions in mediaeval Britain. To most people it would look as it does today, but for some, especially those in the know, who could afford glasses the window would appear somewhat different. An example of the glasses used can be seen in one of the windows in All Saints Church on North Street in York, where a man is holding a simple pair of spectacles, but these would have had one green and one red lens (red glass was very expensive to make, so the glasses would have cost quite an amount).

In the North Transept of York Minster we have re-created the effect of the spectacles using pieces of red and green glass on a frame, and invite visitors to sit behind them and marvel at what our ancestors first saw!

They did it again :-p

I had a quick shoot with my best friends in House of Fools over this past weekend, kept it simple and we love the results. If you haven't heard this band it's something you need to do. For fans of: Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and a touch of Kings of Leon.

Photo was taken backstage at Lincoln Theatre in their recently renovated Green Room. They painted over the Sharpie covered walls, added a REALLY nice couch and chair, new AC unit, TV, and fridge! They went all out, that room is now super comfortable -- all they need now is to sound proof it all!

These guys are currently working on a brand new full length that they are recording on their own, be prepared for something amazing. Once that release gets closer, we are going to plan out a detailed shoot with a bunch of locations -- pretty pumped!!

Breathtaking project, 2013. Model: Ire Fool. Fashion Designer: Elena Massari.

i've got two roomates... both about 23, young by my standards. one of them (the new one, here a month) decides to pull an old trick on april 1. roomate #2 walks into my room, 3pm, and says 'did you do that?', 'what?', he explains and im instantly proud, but also burst out laughing as i find the evidence of the trick played out on #2's entire crotch (nice aim) and then my laughter turns slightly nervous when #2 explains this is the 5th time its happened to him. today.

he wanted to leave the thing that way, hoping that when #1 returns from work he will somehow be caught by his own prank... #2 has a serious case of ADD and kept using the sink. 5 times.

It looks like the cross between a chip that has fallen out of some electronic device and a delicate piece of designer jewelry that I probably need to bring for my wife to pacify her for buggering off to Africa by myself again. Think again because it has legs and even can fly! It is a beetle in the weird and wonderful subfamily Cassidinae, popularly known as Tortoise beetles. There are many species of these small but exquisitely beautiful beetles all over the tropics.

The one we found today did not generously flaunt its beauty for all to admire but was hiding under the bark of a dead tree. It immediately played dead when we uncovered it looking even more like some small inanimate object. That at least made it fairly easy to photograph

This one's for all the Sully's out there - the everyman. RIP Paul Newman.

For those that have no idea what that means, this is Beacon, New York around the time that Nobody's Fool was filmed there. If you haven't seen it, watch it.

A Fruit Food is aptly named, since the word "Fool" is believed to have originated from the French word "fouler" which means "to mash" or "to press". And this is exactly what we do with the fruit to make this dessert. A Fruit Fool begins with making a puree from either fresh or frozen fruit.
