十七世紀的法國畫家尼古拉．普桑（Nicolas Poussin，1594 ~ 1665年）出生於諾曼第省安德利鎮（Les Andelys）的貴族家庭，且是獨子，因此家中對他寄予厚望，積極鼓勵普桑讀書，期待他將來能成為法律家或政府的高階官員。然而，自幼就憧憬於藝術的尼古拉選擇了當畫家，並以他的堅忍精神，走過成名之前的崎嶇道路。
普桑獨自到巴黎前，曾向康坦．瓦蘭（Quentin Varin，1570~1634年）與儒弗內（Jean Jouvenet，1644~1717年）兩位畫家有過短暫學習，那時他只有十八歲，然而由於他不尋常的聰慧才智，使他能用拉丁語吸收各方面的知識。到了巴黎之後，度過了一段艱苦的日子，他像一位流浪畫家，以僅夠糊口的低價賣畫，健康也受損。一六二四年樸桑前往羅馬，盡心學習意大利文藝復興大師們的理論和作品，尤為推崇拉斐爾的古典畫風。歷經十六年的研究，普桑在羅馬享有極高贊譽，盛名甚至遠播至巴黎。一六四零年法國國王路易十三說服了普桑回法國為宮廷服務，尊他為國王的首席畫家，擔任皇家所有繪畫作品及裝飾工作的全部指導的職務。
雖然普桑在法國待了二年，然而影響卻是深遠的。一六四二年，普桑將賞識的後進勒布倫（Charles Le Brun，1619 ~ 1690年）帶回羅馬，並親自指導他繪畫理論和技藝。四年後勒布倫返回巴黎，成為路易十四的宮廷首席畫家及皇家學院院長。在國王的重用之下，勒布倫不僅為凡爾賽宮創作大量的壁畫，設計了鏡廊的整體裝飾；同時把樸桑教導的藝術理念帶入了法國學院規章的制訂之中，其授課對日後法國藝術的影響非常深遠。
法國的藝術傳統本質上一直屬於古典風格，然而直到普桑才告確立。普桑認為藝術是「一種很高的節操，只應為崇高的使命效力…」由於其畫作和人品都受到很高的評價，1657年樸桑被選為羅馬的畫家同業公會的主席，然而淡泊名利、不在乎社會地位高低的普桑辭謝了這份榮譽。所有與他同時代的傳記家都對其學問談吐及古典風範的知識表示欽慕。
普桑的繪畫對美有一種深刻的了解，他認為一幅畫必須包含著最高的道德內涵，表現在一個能傳達其知性內涵的結構中。他時常以小型的舞台佈景上使用蠟質模型，來練習構圖和採光照明，再根據這模型進行無數次習作，才完成定稿。他的繪畫條理分明、表達方式清晰，使觀賞的人對畫中震懾人心的光燦和高貴優雅撼動不已。

Faithful fans turned out in force to watch KCS 1776 lead Train 255 through Winona, MN. We were following 1776 on the FB groups as soon as it came out of the Wabtec factory. We were excited when this brand new unit made it to Chicago just 4 days later, and astounded when they put it on 255 that night!!!
