La señora Rioko, toda elegancia y tradición... que mejor modelo para algo tan exquisito?

This was my second showpiece for chocolate class. I wanted to save it for my graduation table, but it broke when I moved it. You've seen those things happen on the Food Network. yeah, it was sad.

Garden Party of the Terrace of a Country Home. Circa 1730-1750, Mexico. Ten panel folding screen, oil on canvas. Inspired by Asian examples, colonial Mexicans used folding screens to divide spaces, block drafts, and create privacy in their homes. Denver Art Museum, Colorado, USA

There are only about a dozen screens in existence with scenes like this; all were made in Mexico City in the 1700s and most are in private collections.

Some more pics from last months annual Doors Open Day. This is inside the very swish Lyon & Turnbull auction house in the east end of the New Town (I shot some externals of its grand facade a few months back, this is the first time I have been inside tho). They were actually setting up for a large auction but they still took place in Doors Open, which I think was very good of them. It also meant we got to see some fascinating items being laid out for the coming auction, from old steamer trunks to Napoleonic uniforms.

Color on paper

Depicted on this pair of screens is a scene of cherry blossom viewing by people dressed in garments with the latest designs. Whether it was intended to portray a particular event or setting is unclear. The surrounding trees and curtains, however, create a dramatic effect in which the people performing a folk dance and the ladies watching them appear as though they were on a stage

Red background on this round 4-panel folding Chinese screen. The scene is of four Chinese ladies dancing in a garden in front of a temple. The base support of the screen has paintings of Chinese lions. The back of the screen has bamboo stalks painted.

Painting with lacquer is a very meticulous labor of love and the process can take at least several weeks (or in the case of a series of panels, more then several months to complete). Visit our antiques bog to learn more about the whole process @ www.antique-chinese-furniture.com/blog/

Color on silk. The scene of the distant blossoms blending in with the clouds perfectly recalls the realm described in the lines of this old poem: "When I saw Mt. Yoshino covered with cherry blossoms, I thought it was covered with white clouds". Kikuchi Hobun was associated with the Kyoto-based Shijo School, noted for its highly accomplished depictions of cherry blossoms and this painting displays a variety of ingenios touches
