It is butterfly season around here so it seems like a good idea to start posting some butterflies. So I decided to start with a Fluttery Friday Flyday Friday crossover.
Tropical Checkered Skipper and a Fly
A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, suborder Anisoptera (from Greek ανισος anisos "uneven" + πτερος pteros, "wings", because the hindwing is broader than the forewing). Adult dragonflies are characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, sometimes with coloured patches, and an elongated body. Dragonflies can be mistaken for the related group, damselflies (Zygoptera), which are similar in structure though usually lighter in build; however, the wings of most dragonflies are held flat and away from the body, while damselflies hold the wings folded at rest, along or above the abdomen. Dragonflies are agile fliers while damselflies have a weaker, fluttery flight. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colours produced by structural coloration, making them conspicuous in flight. An adult dragonfly eye has nearly 24,000 ommatidia.
Dragonflies are predators, both in their aquatic larval stage, when they are known as nymphs or naiads, and as adults. Several years of their life are spent as a nymph living in freshwater; the adults may be on the wing for just a few days or weeks. They are fast agile fliers, sometimes migrating across oceans, and are often but not always found near water. They have a uniquely complex mode of reproduction involving indirect insemination, delayed fertilisation and sperm competition. During mating, the male grasps the female at the back of the head or on the prothorax, and the female curls her abdomen under her body to pick up sperm from the male's secondary genitalia at the front of his abdomen, forming the "heart" or "wheel" posture.
Loss of wetland habitat threatens dragonfly populations around the world. Dragonflies are represented in human culture on artefacts such as pottery, rock paintings and Art Nouveau jewellery. They are used in traditional medicine in Japan and China, and caught for food in Indonesia. They are symbols of courage, strength and happiness in Japan, but seen as sinister in European folklore.

The Carolina Grasshopper, which is also known as the Black-winged Grasshopper, Road Duster, Carolina Locust, and the Butterfly Grasshopper is a large grasshopper that is typically found in open areas with sand and gravel (such as gravel pits, railway beds and dirt or gravel roads). It is easily identified by its characteristic black wings with yellow rims. The wingspread of males measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) and that of the females 3 1/2 - 4 inches (8.9 - 10.1 cm). The body color ranges from tan to grey, even rose colored, and is dependent on the coloration of the substrate that the grasshopper lived on during its development. The general body color is also faintly speckled.
It ranges in all 48 contiguous United States and at the southern end of all the southern provinces of Canada. Blowouts, field margins, roadside strips, weedy fence rows, railway cuttings, and disturbed rangeland support moderate populations of this species. During the day when temperatures warm, the adults move from vegetated to bare areas such as dirt roads where they fly about and become highly conspicuous.
The Carolina grasshopper selects food plants from both grasses and forbs. An individual's diet depends largely upon the kinds of host plants present in its habitat. Because of its large size the Carolina grasshopper has been regarded as a voracious feeder capable of causing much damage at moderate densities. Observations suggest that the Carolina Grasshopper is a thrifty feeder because it appears to eat all of whatever it attacks.
Adults are good flyers and can hover above the ground. Their flight is similar to a butterfly's in its fluttery wavering nature. In voluntary or appetitive flights, adults fly a distance of 2 to 36 feet at heights of usually 1 to 2 feet. They undulate and may crepitate as they fly. Adults are wary and flush readily at the approach of a person. In flushed flight they may travel a distance of 4 to 70 feet or much farther in a strong wind.
Males are noted for their hovering flight. They rise almost vertically from the ground to heights of 3 to 6 feet, occasionally higher, and hover for 8 to 15 seconds. At the end they flutter down to the ground close to where they started. They may repeat this maneuver as many as five times. During the hovering flight they produce a soft, sibilant sound. The hovering behavior may be a part of courtship in that it attracts females. The display also attracts males so that a small aggregation of several males and a female may gather on the bare ground beneath the hovering male.
The female selects compact ground exposed to the sun in which to oviposit. The selected site is often the edge of a gravel or dirt road. She works her ovipositor to a depth of 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) and deposits a large clutch of eggs that she encloses in a sharply curved pod. After approximately 1 1/3 hours, she extracts her ovipositor and for one to three minutes brushes surface particles with her hind tarsi over the aperture of the hole. The pod, nearly 2 inches long, usually contains more than 40 eggs. The eggs are reddish brown and 4.8 - 5.8 mm long and incubation of the eggs is usually completed in 22 days.
There is one generation per year. Population explosions of this grasshopper are partially controlled by the fungus Entomophaga grylli. Economically the Carolina Grasshopper is not a significant pest, causing minor damage to tobacco, cereals, grasses and alfalfa crops.

Such a beautiful species of butterfly with chequered wing patterns and a slow, fluttery, deliberate flight. There is something very special about being in the right kind of summertime grassland with these bimbling around you!
The Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore) is a small, 53–64 millimetres (2.1–2.5 in), leathery, winged butterfly which is common in grassland and scrub habitats. It belongs to the Nymphalidae or brush-footed butterfly family. It has a weak fluttery flight. It is avoided by most insect predators

love isn't easy. in fact, it's quite the opposite sometimes.
i've been thinking a lot lately about this. love isn't just a fluttery feeling in our hearts, it's also the conscious decision to be kind and compassionate to people who we sometimes hate. i feel like the word "love" is used a little too freely sometimes. think about how many designs, logos, songs, and tattoos have the word love in it? but love is such a difficult thing, that many of us don't practice it very well at all.
on another note, does anyone know a good site to get free downloads of fonts? good fonts? i want to start using typography more in my photos.
also, i'd really appreciate your input on what photos i should submit to a competition. :)

I wrote this title off the top of my head and then I had to laugh.. or maybe cry I have not decided which one yet... at the ER tonight the Doctor told me to cut sodium out of my diet... and I love my salt darn it all! So did this deer family, they found a salt lick and had a blast...
yes, I finally got my insurance today and since the blood pressure was still sky high I went in to get evaluated... and came away with not much help just yet. SO next I get to haul around a 30 day event Monitor to hook up if I have another fluttery session in the heart beat dance...
feeling better than i did a couple days ago hurrah! and getting things checked out finally on many levels.. I think it is just TIME for a 50,000 mile tune up and oil change for my body!

Leucoma salicis taken on my first ever visit to Ainsdale LNR nr. Southport. I hadn't been there long when the sun briefly appeared, along with several dozen White Satin moths. They danced in the sun like ghosts on elastic and as soon as the sun disappeared so did the moths! Well, the all fell to the ground anyway, allowing me to take some atmospheric shots like this one. I love the black/white hooped rugby socks!!
I've been back to the LNR many time since but only seen adults flying on one other occasion - in May 2019 when I took the frame-filling shot of a caterpillar (next photo)

This very mean butterfly came fluttering by my window, taunting me, daring me to try and capture her in all her fluttery prettiness. She won...
This was the first Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) I saw this year and the first I captured with the my 400D. Don't miss the large size (or even the original) to enjoy the details of its wings. But I know I can do better: next time I promise I'll get the right wing in focus, too :-)

David Schnell
The landscape painting of David Schnell reflects the manifestations of a nature, which is getting undercut by our direct, urban surrounding. Thereby architectural pieces capture more or less dominantly the image area of the landscapes. David Schnell uses places such as the cultivated landscape around Leipzig, his domicile and place of study as master student of Prof. Arno Rink, as sources of motive for his pictures.
Within his contemplations of landscape the artist does not evoke real moments of memory. He rather shows an abstract nature which lies beyond any recognizable or concrete experiences. This abstraction manifests itself in the pictorial dissolving of architectural structures and wavering, partly competing vanishing points. Alienating, dissolving, decomposing and subsequent connecting are signs of the artists processual way of working. There are also visual contents which are formed just out of pixels and barcodes. The fluttery status is additionally pointed out by the colouring of the pictures, which ranges from monochrome displays up to prism like light refractions.
The pictures by David Schnell awake the impression of constant speed and destabilisation, which finally also questions the own sense of time.

The two carnations in the back are vintage and the one in the front is another project I've started but haven't quite finished! I found a similar pattern to the original ones in a vintage booklet so made the melon orange one in the front. My version is not as fluttery as the original, I'm not sure exactly how it's constructed without taking it apart. The instructions I've found is a pretty simple pattern and seems to help if you have variegated thread. I found some on ebay perfect for the flower size. I think it may be a modern day size 30 thread.

A fluttery, rather agitated moth seen in the leaf litter. It kept vibrating its wings which made getting a decent photo quite challenging. I think this might be the Gum Snout Moth (Entometa fervens) but I have yet to get that I.D. verified. I liked its colours, especially that lovely orange on the wings! [Blue Mountains, NSW]

What happens when you're a devotee of Comme des Garçons? You find innate mastery in insane cuts, an intense appreciation of how seemingly impossible colours can come together in such a fluid fashion; and most of all, you find yourself being inspired.
Voila!!! The Debutante.
An experiment that turned out decently, thank god.
I paired 18K Solid Yellow Gold (see those glimmering circlets?) with Oxidised Brass, just to see how they would look together. The wee Labradorite Rondelles nestled amongst all clusters are also coiled with 18K Solid Yellow Gold so you can see hints of shimmer and shine here and there.
That LARGE AND IN CHARGE Labradorite Focal is just awesome. This shot was taken on a cloudy day, just post a 10-hour downpour and yet the schiller is like an Energizer bunny. A single Mystic Apricot Topaz Briolette takes the lead amidst a floral contraption fashioned from Polished Rubies and quite a bit of 18K Solid Yellow Gold Wire.
Clusters are comprised of Prasiolites (in a fabulous Asscher Kite Cut), more Polished Rubies and Polished Sunstone Briolettes. Faceted Ruby Nuggets pose such an amazing contradiction to the smoothness of Polished Labradorite Rounds as they connect everything together.
I added heaps of Vintage Brass Jump Rings for a bit of fluttery movement. Loads and loads of Faceted Sunstone Rondelles and even more Polished Rubies balance out this piece.
The Clasp is a gorgeous Brass Toggle Set.
