Dahlias are a captivating and diverse group of flowering plants celebrated for their vibrant and intricate blooms. These flowers belong to the Asteraceae family and are native to Mexico and Central America. Dahlias come in various sizes, shapes, and colors, ranging from small, button-sized pom-poms to large, dinner-plate-sized blossoms. Their petals can be single, semi-double, or fully double, displaying a wide spectrum of colors, including shades of red, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and white.

Dahlias thrive in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight, typically grown from tubers planted in the spring after the threat of frost has passed. Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) encourages continuous flowering. They are versatile plants used to beautify flower beds, borders, and gardens, while their long stems and showy blooms make them popular choices for cut flower arrangements and bouquets.

In regions with cold winters, dahlias are often treated as tender perennials or annuals. To overwinter them, dig up the tubers in the fall after the first frost, let them dry, and store them in a cool, dark place until spring. Despite their beauty, dahlias can be susceptible to pests like aphids and slugs, as well as diseases like powdery mildew and fungal infections, necessitating proper care and vigilance.

Symbolically, dahlias convey meanings of elegance, dignity, and a commitment to an eternal bond in the language of flowers. They are often used in wedding bouquets and other formal arrangements. In Mexico, dahlias hold cultural and symbolic significance as the national flower, further enhancing their charm and importance.

Monarch Butterfly

Took this shot of the Monarch Butterfly at the Upper Perk YMCA Flower Garden.

I've been going to this flower garden for the past few years now. The garden club does a wonderful job planting flowers that attract a lot of butterflies, especially one of my favorites, the Monarch!!

Perfect for insects...

Good day everyone! Thank you for your interest in my work.

Very likely we will get frost where I live in less than a month and the flowers will be gone until next year. Yakima County, Washington. IMG_4047

Happy weekend everyone! I have missed you greatly.

One of our highlights during our visits to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, is always walking around this cottage with its many flowers. In some instances the flowers can be seen to be overflowing the short walls along the sidewalk. Though taken on October 15, the leaves have yet to change color around the cottage. [FA]

This particular structure is from the Cotswold Hills in southeast England. The Fords were attracted to the distinctive character of Cotswold buildings, which are characterized by the yellow-brown stone, tall gables, steeply pitched roofs, and stone ornamentation around windows and doors. Several decorative additions were made to this house in England, before dismantling and re-erecting it in Greenfield Village. When I photographed this cottage years ago (shown at this link: www.flickr.com/photos/bobcarter/5991430846/in/album-72157... , there was a huge tree in the left foreground and ivy covered the left portion of the structure.

This particular park offers a beautiful flower garden to stroll through and is a place that I always enjoy visiting. HSS!

The main residence at Empire Mine was originally owned and occupied by William Bourn and his family. Bourn was responsible for turning the mine into a money making machine. He and his family considered this home as their summer residence, thus the name cottage. I guess that makes sense as the size of the "cottage" is only mere 4,600 sq. ft. and is surrounded by 13 acres of gardens. I imagine they felt a little cramped for space while reposing here during the summer months.

Happy weekend everyone! Please stay safe.

Good day! Thank you for your interest in and support of my photography.

After losing some sleep because of the time change, I needed something to wake me up. So I took the park's garden to Topaz Studio 2 where I added an abstract filter, plus I increased the vibrancy and saturation of the colours. Let's hear it for Sliders Sunday! HSS!
