“Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.” — Rainer Maria Rilke

This is my most favorite quote from Rainer Rilke. I have this on the first page of my journal to help remind myself that sometimes things happen because they are a required process.

Also, My brother and other cousins are on uni break, so they are here for Christmas. I've been baking most of the day for them.

Then we would spend the rest of the afternoon in the pool being silly.

And right now we gathered at the dining table initiating my grandmother to her first soju and makgeolli shot.

So I have to go, and cheers! 🍻

More pictures of my last shoot.

My fiancé and I have been together since I was 16, just about seven years ago, and although we don't share the same last name yet - I love his family as my own.

We got the call Sunday before last that his grandmother was in the hospital, so we raced home in the middle of the night to see her. We had the privilege to hold her hand and play her favorite music as she passed away peacefully, surrounded by those that love her. She was 88 years old, and lived a long and beautiful life.

Rather than a dark and mournful piece, I wanted to do something to commemorate her sublime spirit and life to honor her.

The location is the ivy covered fence of the Derdeyn's back yard, the roses pictured are from Nana's funeral, and the muse is my soon to be sister-in-law Kylie Derdeyn. I found the key and dress with my fiancé when I took him to an antique mall to cheer him up. I wanted the key to represent Nana's adventure onto the other side, and the flowers to represent the fragility and beauty of life.

In memory of Nana, Betty Derdeyn <3 We all love and miss you.

"What a lovely patch of tall lush grass! *flops over*"

What they don't tell you about super-romantic dreamy portraits in tall grass especially when you're your own model and have to reposition the tripod a couple times before you're even in frame never mind in focus is that the grass gets easily crushed and does not exactly bounce back. So better hope you have excellent lying-down skills and can squash the same blades of grass every time, or it doesn't look nearly as organic! Also, it is kind of itchy.

Teenage girl walking by later as I was on my way out: "What were you doing over there??!"

Um. "It's a self-portrait project." Don't judge me :-| Onlookers are the worst!

Anthousai (from Greek άνθος "flower") are nymphs of flowers in Greek mythology. At least so wikipedia says.

The lighting was pretty terrible but oh well I really wanted to shoot this set with my main flower girl.

I was too lazy to make this into a square format, sue me.

We shot in an old, vintage attic. The wooden floor and roof had their own history to tell. Soft light was shining through the windows and Vildan & Manu cuddled up on the bed. He held her in the arms; warming her in her beautiful boho wedding dress. And even though it's a year to go until they get married, she already felt like the most beautiful bride.

I knitted a flower crown for my Cryaotic Plushie ^__^

(It was going to be a scarf, but I thought it looked better as a flower crown)

Selfies are where you pretend to the world you're happier than you really are.

And self-portraits are where you pretend you're sadder.

Sometimes I roll my eyes at that unspoken rule of artists, that the only proper self-portrait is one where you look miserable. Smiling, what is smiling?! But on the other hand, stuck in our social media world sharing only the positive #blessed stuff and uncomfortable coping with sadness, it's also a relief to have somewhere to channel that. And I wish more people were on board.

It's been a tough couple of years and on one hand these stormy skies seemed fitting. Then again, what you don't see is me checking the back of the camera and grinning like a loon at how well the photos were turning out. Things aren't always what they seem.

Helping my son with his art coursework, it just happened to coincide with the theme for week 7: low light. He didn't want to use this photo himself.

This shot was taken in the dark using a off-angle torch and a high ISO 32000 to make much more grain. A long expoure zoom-blur to help the eerie effect.
