Apollo Command Module Boilerplate
A boilerplate is a simplified metal model created to test specific aspects of the real spacecraft, such as water landings, launch abort escape rockets, or recovery systems. It duplicates the size, weight, shape, and center of gravity of the actual vehicle.
This particular boilerplate is BP-1101A. NASA used it for flotation tests in the Gulf of Mexico in July, 1965. After some modifications, NASA used it for additional ocean testing in 1966 and 1967.

Actually this is me installing the cover to the rear hatch which is in the aft bulkhead. I added these to provide an air-filled flotation compartment aft 'just in case.' In practice this bulkhead is too far aft to be easily used, as is evident by the fact that I'm having to lie down just to fit the cover, which is held on (as is the forward hatch) from beneath via shock cord. While it is likely not fully watertight, it will sure slow down water entry if I capsize. Once I sailed the boat, I understand others who say that a capsize is unlikely, as she is very stable.

One-month Trip to Georgia, Carolinas & Minnesota, Fall 2008
Photo: kayaking in southern georgia
Kyla and I head off on our own mini vacation to the south georgia coast to stay at "hostel in the forest". and to check out St. Simons and Jekyll Islands. The hostel in the forest was an amazing experience. We booked the max - 3 nights. The hostel is located in Brunswick, very near the coast and the main sleeping rooms are tree houses, and the main lounge, kitchen, dining room are a cluster of domes. The hostel was built in the 70s by a man named Tom who still comes around on the weekends - very nice bloke. He built the hostel so he could meet travelers something he couldn't do with a family and a job as a lawyer. The hostel is $20 a night which includes a community meal. The working staff were nice touchy-feely hippie types and we met other travelers such as an english bloke, and some science teachers. Our first night we came in the dark just in time for dinner - a nice vegetarian meal with garden veggies. We hold hands before the meal and say our name, where we are from, and what we are thankful for. The next morning Kyla and I got up early to head to town for a kayak adventure down a river with a local company - my first trip. I did well, but had at trouble with the rudder, it was hard to keep it straight so it was a challenge to steer myself. But all in all I liked being in my own flotation device. The Trip was 3 1/2 hours long, and of course I felt a little sore. We didn't see any alligators - only birds. We also explore St. Simons (ugh! too touristy, bad food, expensive museums) and Jekyll Island (lovely beach! Former island of the Millionare's club). We stayed until sunset and once again got into the hostel at night time. On the Sunday of our trip, we decided to stay the whole day at hostel - it was awesome - skinny dip in the pond (twice), walk around to the garden and sweat lodge. Many of the paths are wooden boardwalks raised 2 feet off the ground through the lovely forest. There is a duck pond, murky swimming pool, giant walking labyrinth, tons of tree-roosting chickens. I painted pictures, wrote cards, read books, made shell ornaments by visiting the art dome. Very nice day indeed! At night the fireflies (lightning bugs) were out - magical. The only difficult thing about Hostel in the Forest were all the "palmetto bugs" - aka Roaches. I guess after some heavy rains there were more than usual skiddering about as soon as night falls. I really hated them and it was hard going to sleep at night knowing we had neighbors. Also the bedding was dampish-moldy - so if I stay again, I'd bring some of my own bedding. More about the hostel: www.foresthostel.com
I had built these transom stringers ahead of time. It was just too hard to fit them with the boat upside down. Now that gravity is pulling the right way, they installed easily. It is framed out for a flotation box (There will be 3 in the aft section) and battery box.
In order to get a solid glue joint we tried weighing the stringers down with a cinder block, but this worked much better. We wrapped a tie down around two 2x3s, and set the 2x3s behind the transom and door frame. Then we CRANKED it down. No need for any fasteners!!!

The Flotation Collar and Flotation Bags are the actual bags used on the Apollo 11 Mission. The bags deployed when the spacecraft touched down in the ocean.
They were designed to deploy and right the aircraft in the event that it landed nose down and started to sink.
The custom made flotation collar was fitted to the spacecraft by navy divers who entered the water from a Military Helicopter to stabilise the craft.

Frequently cited as the best public pool in NYC, Hamilton Fish has a couple things that make it a stand out. The first one in my book is that it has two pools. One is enormous and four feet deep (perfect for a little swimmer.) The other is a giant kiddie pool. Kiddie pools can be hard to find in NYC, so the fact that this also happens to be possibly the cleanest public pool in NYC with cool water and attentive lifeguards is all bonus.
Outside of the pool area is also a nice little park with sprinklers and a play area and places to picnic and relax in the shade.
The security at the pool is very rigid. You can see this as a positive or a negative. High security means the ruffians tend to stay away, but it also means you are not allowed to bring anything into the pool area except a towel, sunscreen, a t-shirt and a book. No purses, backpacks or clothes are allowed. It does give the pool a slightly Guantanamo feel if you’re not used to it. It also means you must bring your own lock since you will have to lock your belongings outside of the pool area, but these rules apply to all outdoor public pools.

Flotation, in mineral processing, method used to separate and concentrate ores by altering their surfaces to a hydrophobic or hydrophilic condition—that is, the surfaces are either repelled or attracted by water. ... Flotation has now become the most widely used process for extracting many minerals from their ores.

Not quite overboard, but "better safe than sorry!" The same could be said for the t-shirt that Sumeet is wearing as well. [For those of you that have not seen it... you should.]
Not only was this our first day in Australia, but our first stop in exploring Sydney. Sumeet quickly realized that traveling with a (pseudo) photographer involved waiting for me to change lenses, run around to re-frame shots and explain more about cameras/photography than he ever wanted to know. He was a great sport about it all, but just prior to this shot made the realization, "you never have the right lens on the camera, do you?" Perhaps, with time, I will learn!

These pipes deliver waste rock material to a tailings pond near the Continental Mine in Butte, Montana (= “Richest Hill on Earth”; = "The Mining City"). The Butte Mining District has produced gold, silver, copper, molybdenum, manganese, and other metals.
The area's bedrock consists of the Butte Quartz Monzonite (a.k.a. Butte Pluton), which is part of the Boulder Batholith. The Butte Quartz Monzonite ("BQM") formed 76.3 million years ago, during the mid-Campanian Stage in the Late Cretaceous. BQM rocks have been intruded and altered by hydrothermal veins containing valuable metallic minerals - principally sulfides. The copper mineralization has been dated to 62-66 million years ago, during the latest Maastrichtian Stage (latest Cretaceous) and Danian Stage (Early Paleocene). In the supergene enrichment zone of the area, the original sulfide mineralogy has been altered.
The Continental Mine was started in 1980 by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company - it is currently owned by Montana Resources. The mine targets a low-grade copper and molybdenum deposit on the eastern side of the Continental Fault, a major Basin & Range normal fault in the Butte area with about 3500 feet of offset. The mine's rocks consist of BQM with disseminated copper sulfides, plus copper- and molybdenum-bearing hydrothermal veins that intrude the BQM. Minerals at the site include chalcopyrite, molybdenite, malachite, azurite, tenorite, and cuprite. The latter four minerals are secondary copper minerals, produced by alteration of the primary copper sulfides.
In 2010, the Continental Mine was making 50,000 to 52,000 tons of ore each day. This mine can operate down to an ore grade of 0.1% copper. Most of the mineralization is disseminated copper, but veins are also present. Two stages of mineralization occurred in the Butte area - a porphyry copper system and a main stage system with large veins. The bottom of the porphyry copper system is ~ less than 12,800 feet below the surface. Veins peter out at 5600 to 5800 feet below the surface. At the Continental Mine, veins are small - they're veinlets less than 6 inches wide.
Mining is done 24 hours a day, 365 to 366 days per year. There's 1 to 2 days of down time at the mill. During those days, mining stops and waste material is moved. The ore:waste ratio is 8:10 (= strip ratio). The alluvial overburden consists of 7 paleosol horizons, including some caliches - the lime content results in an average pH of 8. The caliche material can be used to treat acidic materials.
This mine has 14 shovels and 15 trucks. A large Bucyrus shovel can load a 240-ton truck in three passes. The mine's benches are forty feet tall. Blasting is done with ANFO - ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. 0.65 pounds of explosives are used per ton of rock. The mine uses ~45 megawatts of power per day, which is about the same as the city of Butte itself.
Continental Mine ores are crushed in two stages. The crushed ores are then sent to the mill, where they are ground down to the fineness of talcum powder. Flotation and lime are used in processing. Sulfides are collected. 1% of the mined material goes to the concentrator. 99% of mined material becomes tailings. The tailings powder is wet (33% solid and the rest is water) and piped uphill to a pond. The tailings pond water has a pH of 10. Water from the pond is recycled to make tailings slurry. 27 million gallons a day enters the pond. An earthen dam around the pond is designed to withstand a powerful earthquake.
Finally got all the faces on the aft flotation boxen. I have 3 separate ones, if any of them is compromised, there should be enough volume to prevent or slow down disaster.
In front of the middle flotation box is the battery box. I put some purely aesthetic curves on the side of that face.
I love this shot. We're on Hawaii during our family trip there in 2003. Colin couldn't really swim at the time, but he learned to snorkel using a flotation vest. He was so excited to see the fish (and turtles, and coral, and...) that he talked constantly. I couldn't understand a word he said through the snorkel.

On a whim, two energetic high school science teachers decided to enter their high school, a Title I school where most of the students live in poverty, into a sophisticated underwater robotics competition sponsored by NASA and the Office of Naval Research, among others. Only four boys signed up for the competition, but once assembled, with enthusiasm and verve, they started calling oceanic engineers and military contractors for design help. They were advised that their underwater robot would require glass syntactic flotation foam. Short on money, all they could afford was PVC pipe from Home Depot. And some duct tape. Narrated by Michael Pena, Underwater Dreams is the true story of how the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants learned how to build underwater robots. This rag-tag high school team of undocumented Mexican boys did what no one thought possible. The competition, however, was only the beginning. The boys forged a legacy that could not have been imagined: a legacy of aspiration, of activism, and of dreamers.
