In the capacity of USFWS Volunteer doing a marshbird survey of the Upper Pool of the Concord Impoundments, I got caught far from any available shelter when a fast moving, powerful series of electrical cells past through. This lasted 30 or so minutes. I buried myself in some cattails, put a flotation cushion over my head, and rounded into a ball. Yes, it was that bad. During one portion, I videoed the deluge.
In the video below, you will hear dead sounds, pops, and reduced/altered sound. That because the lightning was so close and so frequent, it disrupted the ability of the receiver to process sound. Additionally, the thunder was so loud that it clipped the input signals and you do not hear the full effect of the very, very loud thunder. Watch the cattails to see the flashes of light to see how continuous the strikes were. I hung in there and proceeded to have a wonderful array of breeding marsh birds.

ZJ241 / L (cn 36164) One of the DHFS Griffin HT.1s is seen here in the Search & Rescue Training Unit (SARTU) hangar at RAF Valley. SARTU is a detachment of the Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS), which is based at RAF Shawbury. All DHFS and SARTU aircraft are provided by contractor FB Heliservices under contract CP12/2015. SARTU Griffins differ from the rest of the fleet in that they have flotation gear and winch equipment.
On a whim, two energetic high school science teachers decided to enter their high school, a Title I school where most of the students live in poverty, into a sophisticated underwater robotics competition sponsored by NASA and the Office of Naval Research, among others. Only four boys signed up for the competition, but once assembled, with enthusiasm and verve, they started calling oceanic engineers and military contractors for design help. They were advised that their underwater robot would require glass syntactic flotation foam. Short on money, all they could afford was PVC pipe from Home Depot. And some duct tape. Narrated by Michael Pena, Underwater Dreams is the true story of how the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants learned how to build underwater robots. This rag-tag high school team of undocumented Mexican boys did what no one thought possible. The competition, however, was only the beginning. The boys forged a legacy that could not have been imagined: a legacy of aspiration, of activism, and of dreamers.

After the water level has been lowered, the gates are opened to allow the vessel to transit to the next lock. Each gate leaf is 35 ft. long and they are sealed to contribute flotation to lower the hinge loads.

Pararescuemen and Combat Rescue Officers with the New York Air National Guard's 103rd Rescue Squadron, 106th Rescue Wing, supported by the Hawaii Air National Guard's 154th Wing, 204th Airlift Squadron, conduct personnel recovery training in order to test the new "Front Porch" flotation device for NASA's Orion Crew Module.
This training was conducted alongside NASA personnel at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii during Exercise SENTRY ALOHA March 6, 2017. A major element of this two week TDY is to participate in a joint NASA and Defense Department mission to evaluate recovery techniques and gear that will be used to recover NASA's Orion spacecraft, the next generation of American space vehicle.

Aerospatiale SE.3160/SA.316B Alouette III No. 197 commenced SAR operations, having been fitted with inflatable flotation bags for inshore and limited overwater operations. In 1965 the Alouettes became an arm of a National Ambulance Service provided by the Irish Air Corps, which provided for the transfer of patients to hospitals with helicopter pads. One such hospital is the National Rehabilitation Centre, Dun Laoghaire, which specializes in spinal and other life-threatening injuries.

One-month Trip to Georgia, Carolinas & Minnesota, Fall 2008

Kyla and I head off on our own mini vacation to the south georgia coast to stay at "hostel in the forest". and to check out St. Simons and Jekyll Islands. The hostel in the forest was an amazing experience. We booked the max - 3 nights. The hostel is located in Brunswick, very near the coast and the main sleeping rooms are tree houses, and the main lounge, kitchen, dining room are a cluster of domes. The hostel was built in the 70s by a man named Tom who still comes around on the weekends - very nice bloke. He built the hostel so he could meet travelers something he couldn't do with a family and a job as a lawyer. The hostel is $20 a night which includes a community meal. The working staff were nice touchy-feely hippie types and we met other travelers such as an english bloke, and some science teachers. Our first night we came in the dark just in time for dinner - a nice vegetarian meal with garden veggies. We hold hands before the meal and say our name, where we are from, and what we are thankful for. The next morning Kyla and I got up early to head to town for a kayak adventure down a river with a local company - my first trip. I did well, but had at trouble with the rudder, it was hard to keep it straight so it was a challenge to steer myself. But all in all I liked being in my own flotation device. The Trip was 3 1/2 hours long, and of course I felt a little sore. We didn't see any alligators - only birds. We also explore St. Simons (ugh! too touristy, bad food, expensive museums) and Jekyll Island (lovely beach! Former island of the Millionare's club). We stayed until sunset and once again got into the hostel at night time. On the Sunday of our trip, we decided to stay the whole day at hostel - it was awesome - skinny dip in the pond (twice), walk around to the garden and sweat lodge. Many of the paths are wooden boardwalks raised 2 feet off the ground through the lovely forest. There is a duck pond, murky swimming pool, giant walking labyrinth, tons of tree-roosting chickens. I painted pictures, wrote cards, read books, made shell ornaments by visiting the art dome. Very nice day indeed! At night the fireflies (lightning bugs) were out - magical. The only difficult thing about Hostel in the Forest were all the "palmetto bugs" - aka Roaches. I guess after some heavy rains there were more than usual skiddering about as soon as night falls. I really hated them and it was hard going to sleep at night knowing we had neighbors. Also the bedding was dampish-moldy - so if I stay again, I'd bring some of my own bedding. This is Gerry and his character, El Ryan. El Ryan is an elf shaman that can summon a ghostly spirit bear. Despite the slash-and-maul nature of the spirit bear, El Ryan once used his bear as a flotation device.

The Double D Pool is so called because it sits on Douglas and Degraw in Boerum Hill. It has both a large swimming pool and a good-sized kiddie pool that you can get in with your toddler or baby.

Because of the speed (and the earlier drowning death of Sweden's helmsman when his boat tore itself apart in one race) all crewmen wear complete wetsuits with flotation, a helmet, an emergency signal beacon, and an emergency oxygen supply.

Don't Hassle my Hoff!
Yesterday Berta and I had a costumed housewarming party (thanks to all those who came out). The theme was "famous duos" and Berta's brilliant idea was to attend as Baywatch Pamela Anderson and David Hasslehoff. The Sonny & Cher, Wonder Twins and Britney & K-Fed ideas were quickly tossed to the side for classic beach camp.
I'm so glad I broke my own rule and told Puma what our costumes would be, because without her I would never have found the Baywatch swimsuits and the running theme song gesture.
We couldn't help running to the nearest beach after the last guest left to take photos. I can't stop laughing.

A shot of the Cockpit looking aft from within the Pilot house area. The white/grey conduit on the left runs forward to the hanging locker and electrical area. It will exit in the starboard seat locker to provide a wiring chase for the depth transducer and whatever else needs to run aft. Again the picture shows some of the 2 inch flotation that will be sealed under the sole.
