In Fort Myers Florida, at the Davis Art Center, they have a unique exhibit located on the sidewalks in front of the center. These are called the Caloosahatchee Manuscripts. The display are two bronze cylinders about nine feet tall with a words cut into the walls and a light in the middle. The artist was Jim Sanborn. The eastern drum contains a Native American story.

The western drum, contains Latin names of plants that Thomas Edison tested to make a different kind of rubber for car tires. This image was exposure bracketed because of the wide dynamic range needed.

An evening fishing on a Florida pier. Since the fishing had been slow, I decided to just watch the sunset. Glad I had.

A South Florida Sunrise. Just returned from 5 wonderful weeks in Italy and now looking forward to visiting some of my favorite Florida locations.

These two fledgling Burrowing Owls were practicing their concealment skills along Joe Overstreet Road . I think they need to work on it a little more . Mom was only two fence post down keeping a close watch.

In Florida, burrowing owls mainly eat insects, especially grasshoppers and beetles. They can be of special benefit in urban settings since they also consume roaches and mole crickets. Other important foods are small lizards, frogs, snakes, birds, and rodents.

Eggs are primarily laid in March but nesting can occur from October through May. The female lays six to eight eggs over a one-week period. She will incubate the eggs for 21 to 28 days.

At hatching, the young owls are covered with white downy feathers and have their eyes closed. They emerge from the burrow when they are 2 weeks old. At 4 weeks, they are learning to fly but cannot fly well until 6 weeks old. They remain with their parents until they are 12 weeks old.

These two could fly and I observe one of them fly up to the top of a fence post but, I would not call it exactly graceful flight. (smile)

EXPLORE Dec 10

Explored April 02, 2009 # 175

This is one of the first few photos I made when I went to Florida early this year. I knew this was going to be a technically difficult image to take and I honestly thought it would not work. I made this a panoramic focus stacked image. I had to fight the changing light and the moving waves... I was not quite sure it was doable. I mentally scrapped the image as a write off. I went on to photograph other locations on the trip that I was looking forward to much more than this one. As I worked the images, the photograph slowly started to emerge until eventually I realized that there was something to be had coming out of these raw images. 20 images later this is what eventually came out of it. One of the natural byproducts of stacking these images over time is the natural increase in dynamic range, giving a slight glow to the image as well. Overall, this is a wonderful success story from what I thought was a lost cause. Hopefully those that read this can find a little motivation to try images that they feel aren't worth it, but with a little effort and persistence they are! Enjoy! :)

Last weekend I helped my parents move down to Florida from the Twin Cities area. The 1,590 mile drive from start to finish was an adventure and it was fun to see all the sights along the way.

This northbound was one of 4 trains I bagged here at Deerfield Beach. This would be a great spot to shoot FEC #109 but he does not run on Monday when I was here, so we will save that opportunity for next year.

My Florida morning routine; up at 7am, which is later than normal, but after all, I'm on vacation. A light breakfast, coffee, some Flickr time to comment on others 366, and take the sunrise from our condo. Then I go for a 1 1/2 to 2 hour bike ride. Repeat.

It's April 2 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and it's snowing for the second day in a row. I decided to post some previously unshared memories of my February trip to Fort Meyers Beach, Florida in protest of our present weather conditions. No, I wouldn't want to move from Wisconsin. We have, however, seen more than our share of snow and ice. Enough, Mother Nature! Enough!
