This exquisitely carved figure is part of the ornamentation surrounding the main portal to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. The angel itself is less than 1 foot (30 cm) tall, so the work is very fine. The spiraling and inlaid columns on either side show the mastery of the stone carvers who created them.
