Combi flight anyone?
Why fly direct, when you can take twice as long dropping cargo off en route... the cargo getting precedence over the passengers.
Shell had an agreement with KLM to reduce the prices for ship's crews. Combi flights only had circa 40 seats, the remainder of the aircraft was configured for air freight.

My first flight, on 24/08/1973, was to Beirut.
See internal page with data, here: flic.kr/p/2kXTFQ8
My poor mum must have been worried out of her mind, but, needless to say, it passed off without event.
Earlier, in April 1973, the Israelis carried out a stunning raid in Lebanon, which was in retaliation for the massacre of 9 Israeli participants at the 1972 summer Munich Olympics.
Three senior PLO leaders were killed in their apartments, and many other military and civilian personnel also perished.
In the ensuing months, tensions among the various Lebanese factions, both religious and military, increased, and culminated in the disastrous civil war which lasted between 1975 and 1980.
The Lebanon continues to suffer at the hands of their diverse governmental factions, and is currently heading to become a Failed State. Another disaster befalls this blighted country.
The flight from London was by Middle East Airlines (Lebanese) 747 to Beirut with a stopover, and after some delays, we set off again for Abu Dhabi and then Dubai, where I was to join the BP tanker 'British Argosy'.
It was a relief to arrive unscathed in Dubai, in what was then becoming the hottest summer in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf for many years. It was a baptism of sweat.
It was so hot, that even experienced old sea dogs could only work for about ten minutes on deck, before seeking respite in any shade to be found, or for those of us in the engine room, under any blower to reduce our body temperatures.
People often struggle to believe that we frequently did manual work in temperatures over 55C on steam powered ships, but that was the reality.
Our daily intake of sodium chloride (salt) tablets was supposed to be, I think, a maximum of eight. Out of necessity, we grabbed handfuls of the tablets, multiple times a day, and washed them down with copious amounts of water to ward off sunstroke / dehydration.
When dehydration strikes, it makes you feel really sick, really quickly.

This piece of coast is just absolutely beautifull, drove through the following places: Genova, Bogliasco, Recco, Portofino, Bonassola, Levanto & Portovenere and slept in hotels with ocean view only !
Hotel Tips:
La Gianda Del Mesco – Levanto
Torre Cambiasco – Genavo
La Giara – Recco
Mare Mesco – Levanto
Car Rental Tip:
Avis.com
Lancia Ypsylon
The car I rented was one of the best choices for me, small car (for the narrow streets) and gaswise…spend about 30 euro’s for 4 days, drove many hours with it, economical I would say !

This series of 3 scans show the front and back cover of a British Airways flight ticket and the inside booking details. I have omitted the passenger name and the credit card details used to purchase the ticket
I am assuming the ticket was issued in 1982 and it is interesting to note that the "EuroBudget Fare" with no changes allowed at all from the flight from Dublin to London amounts to £126.00 Irish pounds. The flight from Dublin to London was booked for 25/8/82 on British Airways flight BA805 and the return London to Dublin flight is on the Aer Lingus flight EI153
Perhaps this ticket refers to 1972 not 1982..can anyone enlighten me

For those keen on shopping, we went to a new mall full of high street fashion brands like Top Shop, Nine West, Aldo and Karen Millen – and it was cheap! I purchased a wallet and 2 necklaces from Aldo for HK$250 – worth going just for the shopping!
As the country is opening up they are starting to attract more tourists. So if you like to travel off the beaten track, think about heading there sooner rather than later before the city is crawling with tourists!
Almaty has a wide range of food, and we got to try everything from Chinese, Russian, Uzbek and Kazak food. The locals eat a lot of mutton, and for special occasions – horse meat. Specialty drinks also include the obvious, vodka, as well as camel’s and horse’s milk. Alasha is an Uzbek restaurant that provides good entertainment with locals dancing. The last night we were in the city were also lucky enough to eat at a place called Kazak Aul which was a local restaurant in the mountains which had 3 yurts (local houses) set up for diners.

Almaty used to be the capital city until 1997 when the Republic moved the capital to Astana. The city is in the mountain range so is the climate does vary. In the end of August, the mornings and evenings were cool (about 15 degrees) but the days were about 26 degrees. The city itself is a real mixture of old and new. Since Kazakhstan declared itself an independent country in December 1991, there has been more of a European influence in the architecture, alongside older Soviet-style infrastructure.

The gateway to Burma, Yangon is where contemporary and colonial Burma coexists. I don’t recommend spending a lot of time in Yangon, where the main attractions – the pagodas and colonial buildings can be done in a day.
Restaurant recommendation: Le Planteur is a real gem. It serves quality French food in a fantastic setting. For a more local eatery, Feel Myanmar is a great place to try local Burmese cuisine.

Only 15Km from the city centre is Medeo which has the highest ice skating rink in the world at just under 1700m above sea level. Unfortunately, the rink is only open during winter. Medeo is where the first of the gondolas start to head up the mountain to Chimbulak Ski Resort. The ride was about 20 minutes over sweeping hills. By the time we reached Chimbulak, we were at about 2200m above sea level. There is a ski village with one small resort and some nice cafes and restaurants – a great spot to hang out for a while. During the summer, this area is great for hiking.

The gentle way of life on the lake is meditative, whether you are visiting one of the floating gardens by boat, observing the fishermen with their unique fishing style, or simply relaxing on your balcony enjoying the serenity and tranquility only found in this little gem of a place. We stayed at Viewpoint Eco Lodge in Nyaung Shwe. Its luxurious cottage suites are built in the traditional Shan style – stilts on a lake. The staff paid close attention to every little detail so that our stay was a memorable one.

One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to Panklov Park and Zenkov Cathedral which is the second tallest wooden building in the world and is the most vibrant of colours – they repaint it every year! Only a short walk from Panklov park is the Green Market and Chocolate Factory. The Green market is where the locals go to buy their meat and preserves. The Chocolate Factory is amazing! The quality of chocolates is up there with the best in the world yet doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (Only paid about HK$67 for 6 gift packs)!
