NASA astronauts Douglas Hurley (left) and Robert Behnken (right) participate in a dress rehearsal for launch at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 23, 2020, ahead of NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission to the International Space Station. Demo-2 will serve as an end-to-end flight test of SpaceX’s crew transportation system, providing valuable data toward NASA certifying the system for regular, crewed missions to the orbiting laboratory under the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 30, 2020, carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station for the agency’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission. Liftoff occurred at 3:22 p.m. EDT. Behnken and Hurley are the first astronauts to launch from U.S. soil to the space station since the end of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011. Part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, Demo-2 is SpaceX’s final flight test, paving the way for the agency to certify the crew transportation system for regular, crewed flights to the orbiting laboratory. F-35As take off on a test flight at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, Feb 18, 2016. Six operational test and evaluation F-35s and more than 85 Airmen of the 31st TES travelled to Mountain Home AFB to conduct the first simulated deployment test of the F-35A, specifically to execute three key initial operational capability mission sets: suppression of enemy air defenses, close air support and air interdiction. Prototype of the Embraer Praetor 600 performing minimum takeoff speed tests (Vmu), where the airplane is forced to leave the ground at the lowest possible speed and sometimes ends up dragging the tail protection ski on the ground.

Determination of Vmu is a certification requirement and is used as a reference for adding a safety margin and defining normal takeoff speeds.

These tests are usually done early in the morning, due to the calm atmosphere, and the faint light of dawn emphasizes the effect of sparks from the tail ski.

A colorful sunrise marks the dawn of a new era in human spaceflight ahead of NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 mission, as the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft stand ready for launch at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 29, 2020. The rocket and spacecraft lifted off from historic Launch Complex 39A at 3:22 p.m. EDT on May 30, carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station as part of the agency's Commercial Crew Program, returning human spaceflight capability to the U.S. after nearly a decade.
