"CAN YOU ALL JUST WAIT ONE MINUTE !! I'VE ONLY GOT 8 LEGS !!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALL THIS MOTHER'S DAYS HAVE COME AT ONCE !!!
Strewth. Found this little domestic scene about ten feet in the air under the house eaves. The picture is about four times the actual size.
Talk about an extended family!
There's a cartoon theme song in this: "Look out, here comes the Spider-mum!"
Dedicated to my mother, who probably wished she had eight legs what with having four kids....

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (not threatened)
When I saw this Waxy Monkey Tree Frog, I could feel the smile forming on my face. = ) He looked so funny and silly, like a miniature Jabba the Hut, but he also had this peaceful expression of happiness and contentment. He must be optimistic that a princess like Snow White will kiss him and turn him back into a prince. He remained motionless the whole time I watched him, maintaining his pose while I photographed him. Seeing this little guy was one of the highlights of my visit to the St. Louis Zoo (free admission--and it's an amazing zoo!). If you see him at the St. Louis Zoo, tell him that Rick says hello. ; )
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikon Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED
F-stop: f/5.6
Exposure time: 1/60 sec.
ISO speed: ISO-450
Focal length: 105mm
35mm eq. focal length: 157mm
Photoediting: Cropped (extreme--more than 93%), darkened and blurred background (Gaussian), adjusted levels and sharpened, cleaned up with cloning/blurring in Photoshop Elements 5
Handling and lighting: handheld with VR on, photographed through glass with lens as close to the glass as possible, no flash
Other comments: I had two lenses with me, the 18-105mm VR and the 70-300mm VR. I tried to use the longer lens, but due to the minimum focusing distance, it couldn't be used effectively. If I had stepped back farther, then I would have had a hard time with the reflections on the glass. For this reason, I used the 18-105mm VR, and followed up with a massive crop (more than 93% of original image removed) to create the close-up.

Koala - He JUMPED... From one tree to the next!
The koala is an arboreal herbivorous mammal. A marsupial (pouched mammal), and native to Australia. Its closest living relatives are wombats. They are not bears!
A Koala diet consists basically of eucalypt leaves and they live in forests of eucalyptus trees. Since eucalypt leaves have a high water content, the koala does not need to drink often. They are sedentary animals that need to sleep a lot to give their food time to digest, up to 20 hours a day. They are predominantly active at night and spend most of their waking hours feeding.
Hope you enjoy!

I apologize for the low quality of this photo, but this was the only instant (2 seconds) these guys were together in 4 hours of viewing today. I thought the locals might enjoy it anyway.
You guessed it. Their eyes are on mom, and they were quick to follow her.
This was their first "offical" day in public and all the local TV video guys were there. The sky was overcast at this point and my compact camera doesn't do well in low light.

Walking the short distance from the lion exhibit to the giraffe feeding station, I saw a giraffe with a little girl to his right and a little boy to his left, both petting his neck. Another little girl was in front feeding him crackers. As I approached he raised his head and turned towards me, seemingly recognizing me as an adult with an appreciation for the scene, and with this look clearly conveyed, “Is this great, or what?”
He quickly returned to the children and I never got another shot. I really don’t know that this was a male giraffe, but I just can’t picture a female losing her composure to the extent required to produce this expression.

I don't know if today, 03-27-09, was the first time that a female and male were out together, but it's the first time I have seen it in 6 years of regular visits to the Cincy Zoo.

I made a quick trip to Cincinnati this week and got to spend a day at the zoo with my uncle (wAlanb). After two years of admiring her Flickr images, we finally got to meet up with Connie Lemperle (lemperleconnie). As an official, volunteer Cincinnati Zoo Photographer, Connie was the perfect hostess.
After we talked photo equipment, Connie showed us the ins and outs of photographing the new tiger cubs and other residents of Tiger Canyon. Having followed her photography, descriptions, and interaction with Flickr members, Connie is just what we expected, a very nice lady with a big love for people and animals.
Thanks Connie. We had a great time shooting with you and hope to do so again in the not to distant future.
Charles
