The evening sun was shining beautifully on this Northern Flicker in my yard.

In Mountain Ash Tree

Staying in the archives, this from 2016, we'll make this a double Flicker day, as I've not been able to photograph one this year.

Yesterday, I saw the first of the Grackles have returned, and the Bluebirds are actively scouting the boxes. All promising signs!

Happy Woodpecker Week!

Thanks for Viewing.

Female,Northern Flicker.

The Northern Flickers claim their space early in the morning and demand 1st place on the feeders when they are put up, a little competitive with the stellar jays

I guess this female didn't like the way her mate cleaned out this hole, she was busy all morning cleaning house, he did show up after awhile and helped.

I was taking a photo of a nice saguaro cactus in bloom. My husband saw "a bird" and suggested to him that he would look good on the saguaro. Within seconds, there he was. There were 5 arms, all blooming, on this very old saguaro and the Flicker went to each one providing a fantastic opportunity to get what I would consider a relatively rare photographic experience: Gilded Flicker on a blooming saguaro, taking his time to savor the goodness.

I was in my front yard raking leaves when this Flicker flew right by me, landed on a close boulevard American Elm, and started pecking, It gave me time to go inside and grab my camera.

Always a treat when the flickers allow photos. She is eyeing a water source. Shot in early morning light in the San Diego County mountains.

SO WHY DO PHOTOS OF FLICKERS RECEIVE SO MANY VIEWS ON FLICKR?

Is it related to searches somehow? My images (that don't go into Explore) would normally never rack up over 5000 views so quickly - does anyone know the explanation of this mystery?

Northern flicker, male

Two "Yellow-Shafted" Northern Flicker males doing a mating dance. An entertaining to start my day at the golf course.

The northern flicker always adds a little bit of spice to the garden, I find them quite skittish and always give myself a pat on the back when I get a half decent picture

I was watching this Northern Flicker feed on the side of the path, I stayed still and she kept one eye on me. I did not want to disturb her but some idiot had an unleashed dog and she took off.

The northern flicker or common flicker is a medium-sized bird of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands, and is one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. Wikipedia

New Urbanist communities, Rosemary Beach is an architectural treasure trove, boasting influences from the West Indies, New Orleans, Charleston and St. Augustine, among others.

The grand homes (many with adjoining carriage houses that are just as extraordinary) are interconnected by a discrete network of pedestrian paths and boardwalks, which become even more charming at night, basked in the soft flicker of gas-lit lanterns.

Like most Traditional Neighborhood Developments (TNDs), the best way to explore Rosemary Beach is on foot (or on a beach cruiser). Wood-plank pathways meander through the town’s striking architecture, often revealing hidden amenities such as playgrounds, bubbling fountains, tennis courts or one of the community’s several cosmopolitan swimming pools.

First snow in 2017, spotted this Northern Flicker in the backyard.

A male Red-shafted Northern Flicker Woodpecker contemplates its next move on a chilly winter day. This was the first day we received snow on Vancouver island, so I thought I'd go outside with my camera and see what there might be to shoot. I couldn't have been more happy when this male Northern Flicker ( Red-shafted) landed so close that I had fun fitting him within the edges of the frame at 400mm.lol

Although the Flicker will eat from the seed feeders, his favorite winter meal is suet.
