Bayou La Loutre
Yscloskey, Louisiana
St Bernard Catholic Church, established in 1785, held a blessing of the Shrimp Fleet for the Fall White Shrimp shrimp season set to open in August 2015. The blessing was held on the banks of Bayou La Loutre, once the old course of the Mississippi River over 3,000 years ago.
By the late 19th century, Yscloskey in St Bernard Parish, was firmly established as a commercial fishing village. Commercial fishing families for generations have long played a major - but sadly an often overlooked - role in Louisiana's economy and deep richness of culture.
The great stress this community has felt as a result Coasal Erosion, Hurricane Katrina and the Macando Well disaster has been extremely rough on the fishing familes.
We are all hoping for a good season for the community. May they be blessed.
And I should also add... after Archbishop Aymond's blessing and the blessing of the Shrimp Fleet by Arch Bishop Aymond, Reverend Anton Ba Phan and Reverend, the community served hundreds of pounds of shrimp, oysters and crabs to all.
