A morning shot of Flatford Mill from Willy Lott's House today and the link to Constable's painting from almost the same spot.
This cottage was originally known as Gibeons Farm, lived in by William Lott (1761-1849), a tenant farmer. It gained its name and its fame through John Constable's inclusion of it in several of his paintings, notably the Haywain.
Located on the bank of the River Stour, the cottage is just downstream from Flatford Mill, which was owned by Constable's father. It is now a Grade 1 listed building, and belongs to the National Trust.
It was a drizzly, rather mournful, day when we visited but the softly falling rain did not disturb the surface reflections of the pond.

The scene is relatively unchanged since John Constables painting 'The Haywain' was completed in 1821. The trees to the right were absent from the original, and there was more of the riverbank in the foreground. The 'note box' shows approximately the bounding of the scene in his painting.
Looking across the millpond at the mill. The ducks were all performing, trying to draw the attention back to themselves I notice, botties in the air, all of them, but sadly for them the focus was on the mill this time - which I guess is kind of the object of going to visit Flatford Mill!
