Taken last winter on a visit to York. The medieval city of York has this wonderful old wall encircling it which is fully open to the public. It dates back to Roman times although most of the Roman bits were replaced by another wall built by the Viking invaders around 1400 years ago. The current wall, while retaining elements of the Roman and Viking structures, dates back to construction that took place from the 12th to 14th century, so basically it's a pretty old wall. What a treat it was for me to capture this elderly gentleman in his traditional flat cap strolling along this part of the wall. But look closely because this is something I just can't figure out. He doesn't appear to have any hands! I have no idea why that is. I haven't touched this image other than to process it in the normal way. Very weird indeed.

A flat cap (sometimes "scally cap") is a rounded cap with a small stiff brim in front, originating in Great Britain and Ireland. The hat is known in Ireland as a paddy cap, in Scotland as a bunnet, in Wales as a Dai cap, in New Zealand as a cheese-cutter, and in the United States as a driving cap. Cloths used to make the cap include wool, tweed (most common), and cotton.

Candid eye contact street photography from Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The flat cap being almost synonymous with the North of England. Enjoy!

I made this image just over two years ago. When I started my Norther Quarter Project in April of this year I spent some time looking for this shop to re-shoot. I knew where it was, but couldn't figure out why I couldn't find it. Eventually it dawned on me that it is next door to the Lower Turk's Head and is now a wine bar that is an extension to the pub. The facade is nowhere near as much fun as this! The pub is #045 in this series:
A vintage look and glamping go together like... eeehm... two thing that go well together.

Wishing you all an awesome weekend of photography my Flickr friends. If you're in the UK and in the path of Storm Isha, then stay safe in those 80mph gusts. That's 9 named storms this year and we're only on the 20th January. Keep the shutters clicking everyone. Enjoy!

At Otley cattle market, before its closure and now demolition due to the foot and mouth disease some years back, on a Saturday it used to be a hive of activity where farmers from all around the Dales and Moors brought their (mostly) sheep and cows to be auctioned.
You’d see the most amazing characters and it was a very social occasion
I had spotted this gentleman, saw Paul (who can be shy about approaching people) go over to him, but the gent was just shaking his head, no.
I winked at Paul and said very confidently (ahem!);” I'll get it...”
And I did, immediately, and look at that smile.
The gent agreed with a twinkle in his eyes.
It proves again, that people are people no matter what, here a bit of kindness and attention from a lady and he was happy to pose.
We had a nice chat afterwards, but I must have that ‘je ne sais quoi’? heeeeeeeeeeee
I often like the discipline of touching back the basics, one camera, one lens, a grainy 400 asa b&w film, and go out there.
Have a kind day and thank you for your visit, M, (*_*)

Street photography is a little bit out of my comfort zone but today I visited a steam rally full of photo opportunities and quickly bagged this one.
Such a cool looking fella, in a splendid setting, in great light.

This is my final image from the David Hockney 2025 retrospective exhibition in Paris – and what better way of concluding proceedings than with a capture of the great man himself?
It’s a detail from a photographic drawing (who knew?!) entitled Looking at the Flowers (Framed), created by Hockney in 2022. It’s printed on paper, mounted on sheets of Dibond (aluminium composite sheet), and measures 300cm x 518cm. What I love about this self portrait is that it’s a rear view of the man defiantly smoking a cigarette.
Hockney, as any aficionado will know, is a lifelong tobacco inhaler who rails at all the restrictions in place against smoking. And, I suppose, at the age of 87, why should he care?
Anyway. Farewell to the Hockney Paris exposition; to have been here and seen it for myself has been one of the highlights of my cultural life. I’ve followed him and his work since the 1960s, and he’s still creating, innovating, exploring ideas, pushing the boundaries of art – and showing no sign of slowing down. Joy!
