Macro Monday - theme: DIY
I made brackets like these for each of my flash units. When a flash is on an umbrella adapter with an umbrella, with this bracket it's flat and very close to the stem of the umbrella, aimed along the center axis (instead of 5"-8" offset in typical position on an umbrella adapter). Also, the weight of the flash unit counter-balances the umbrella better.
I took part in the Manchester Weekender 2012 presents All in a Flash - a one day photography exhibition on the 14th october 2012.
Under the guidance of Len Grant, we tried to capture the characters of the Manchester Northern Quarter.
My theme was people at work within the Northern Quarter.
After taking photographs for a couple of hours, we each had a single shot printed out and took part in an exhibition flashmob - best described as a guerilla gallery.
Unfortunately only one shot was printed, so this gallery is an opportunity to say thank you to some of the other people that were kind enough to let me take their photograph.

I just got a new external flash for my B-Day. Here are some experiments with it. The top shot is just natural light from some small overhead flood lights. The second shot is with the flash aimed directly at the subject. The third is with the flash bounced off the ceiling. I've got a lot to learn about using it, but I like the results so far.

"Profile Of A Yellow Jacket Wasp"
Yellowjacket is the common name in North America for predatory wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries. Most of these are black and yellow; some are black and white, while others may have the abdomen background color red instead of black. They can be identified by their distinctive markings, small size (similar to a honey bee), their occurrence only in colonies, and a characteristic, rapid, side to side flight pattern prior to landing. All females are capable of stinging. Yellowjackets are important predators of pest insects

Two Yongnuo YN560 Manual Flashes fired wirelessly using Yongnuo 602 triggers.
Flashes were placed one each at left and right of the subject, and fired from the sides, using a wide body plastic tube with tracing paper lining to create an even circular diffused light around the subject.
Test shots taken on newly acquired Pentax Pino 35 with Agfa Vista 200 CN. This is a basic fixed focus manually set aperture (symbols) 80's camera with fixed shutter of 1/125 with a built in flash
A few weeks previously the bridges at Woodside backed up i a flash flood, completely wiping out several dozen yards of the fill at the west switch. The westbound BNSF Denver-Provo manifest freight glides through slow orders over temporary panel track laid on the restored grade next to the old rails shoved aside by the water. 3 September 2022.
Fritzing breadboard view of flash trigger hackery. Substantially upgraded from last round, the Arduino now powers the laser and sensor, opens the shutter, and fires the flash about 165 milliseconds after the beam is diminished by 0.5% relative the previous ten readings.

I took the new Sigma out for a glass of water at the Hollywood. Oh and had it on the off camera cord. (Flash on a string)
Coming away from my parents' house this Christmas, I was encouraged to take some of my junk that was still in their garage since I left, years ago. In one box were four cameras, including this. It's a Coronet Cub Flash, made in Birmingham in about 1948. It takes 828 roll film; I'll have to order this from Film for Classics. One of the other cameras in the box is a Kodak Bantam Colorsnap; also for 828, and in better condition, so I think I will order some film.
The lens tube is supposed to collapse with a twist-and-push action against a spring. The plastic body has distorted though, so once out, this one won't go back in without unreasonable force. I hope the body isn't so warped that it leaks light. After cleaning, the shutter and aperture work fine. The lens has a mark on it though, and the viewfinder is rather cloudy.

[Update, several years later: as time goes by, the camera is getting more twisted as the plastic degrades, and the drawer this lives in has an interesting chemical smell. I might still be able to make it light tight, just about. I'm glad I ran at least one short roll through it, anyhow: there are just a couple of pictures uploaded - click the Cub Flash tag on the right to see them.]

Interesting flash from the early 1960s.
Still new in its original box.
It shows very nicely in a display of classic cameras from that era.

Cosa è un Frozen Flash Mob??
Sostanzialmente, è un raduno di persone che non si conoscono di persona ma che sono venute a conoscenza dell' evento via internet o attraverso canali alternativi (passa parola, etc..). Solitamente il raduno avviene in un luogo pubblico molto frequentato (una piazza o all'interno di un evento più grande...).
Le persone vi si recano e compiono un'azione collettiva, precisata preventivamente, che potrebbe essere: cantare una canzone, giocare, recitare un breve sketch o, come nel caso del "Frozen", rimanere bloccati in una posizione per un breve arco di tempo!
Autoretrato usando un DIY Ring flash cuadrado. El tamaño de la caja son unos 25x30 cm, un micro-flash Hanimex (usa 1 sola pila) disparado aproximadamente a 30 cm de distancia con un cactus triger.

Preparing the diffuser on the flash before a long documentation session in the "Minerva room" of the Architecture Faculty in Florence, Supivas as the occasional versatile subject.
Original shots taken with an Olympus E-500 digital slr, 9-18mm Zuiko zoom lens, flash with additional diffuser, almost no post processing.
