The Western Kingbird
An eye-catching bird with ashy gray and lemon-yellow plumage, the Western Kingbird is a familiar summertime sight in open habitats across western North America. This large flycatcher sallies out to capture flying insects from conspicuous perches on trees or utility lines, flashing a black tail with white edges. Western Kingbirds are aggressive and will scold and chase intruders (including Red-tailed Hawks and American Kestrels) with a snapping bill and flared crimson feathers they normally keep hidden under their gray crowns.
Western Kingbirds are fairly large flycatchers with large heads and broad shoulders. They have heavy, straight bills, long wings, and a medium-length, square-tipped tail.
Western Kingbirds are gray-headed birds with a yellow belly and a whitish chest and throat. The tail is black with white outer tail feathers that are especially conspicuous in flight.
Easily found perched upright on fences and utility lines, Western Kingbirds hawk insects from the air or fly out to pick prey from the ground. They ferociously defend their territories with wing-fluttering, highly vocal attacks. Vocalizations include long series of squeaky, bubbling calls as well as single, accented kip notes.
Western Kingbirds live in open habitats, where they perch on utility lines, fences, and trees. They prefer valleys and lowlands, including grasslands, deserts, sagebrush, agricultural fields, and open woodlands. They are typically found below about 7,000 feet in elevation.

A tree full of these fabulous starlings is a sight to see. They are communal nesters and gather in huge flocks to buid their nests and raise their young. This one is having a quick snack before the demands of parenthood calls it back to work.

Here is a close look at one of their nests. There is probably one monogamous pair, plus neighbour or maybe helpers. There are lot of questions about how these birds work together.

A female Anna's Hummingbird is on high alert to defend her Lantana flowers! She started chattering, flared her tail, and flew up to chase off an incoming Hummingbird. She was successful this time!!

Was reading some articles on low hanging fruit to reduce CO2 emissions and its crazy to me that we still allow flaring - the burning of natural gas as a waste product during oil development. Surprisingly on average 1% of gas produced across the US is flared – amounting to 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcfd) in 2018. At $2 per thousand cfd, this amounts to a wasted $2 million per day, as well as a significant increase in GHG emissions. With all that money on the table you'd think someone would have cracked this nut by now. I took this photo over a decade ago in western Colorado and have taken ones similar in Texas just in the past year.

Before the coming of the railway, the Berkel was a major shipping route for goods from Münster to Eibergen, Borculo, and Zutphen, transported in flat-bottomed boats called Berkelzompen.
The zomp is an old ship type, which was mainly used to the east of the IJssel. On the rivers and streams, Overijsselse Vecht, Regge, Schipbeek and Berkel, these boats were used between 1670 and 1925. As a type, the zomp is a pram. However, it has wide flared sides and therefore a very deep sheer. Vertical detachable side cuffs were placed on top. This created a large cargo hold at shallow draft.

The original Canadian Mapleleaf trucks were Montreal-licence-built 1-1/2-ton to five-ton models that were originally developed by Menard Motor Truck Company of Ontario. They were produced between 1919 and 1922.
The better-known Maple Leaf models were built at General Motors’ Oshawa plant in Canada, from 1930 until 1948.
As per online info.
Amongst the missing parts, are the big chrome, independently attached bug-eyed style headlamps. The wiring however, seems to be intact and is seen protruding through the sturdy metal of the large, flared-out front fenders.

My temperature is still at 100, but my gut doesn't hurt as badly. I think I am on the mend. Now, my left sciatic nerve has flared up. Always something wrong. A North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) assumes his defensive pose to any potential danger. Porcupine flared his rear end guard hairs thus exposing the nest of quills. This is the same porcupine from the previous post. Agricultural landscape east of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Die heilige Familie war am Heiligabend erschöpft eingeschlafen und das Feuer drohte zu erlöschen. Das sah ein kleiner, grauer Vogel. Schnell flog er vom Dach herunter zum Feuer und fächelte mit seinen Flügeln so lange hin und her, bis die Flammen des Feuers wieder aufflammten und das Feuer wieder knisternde Wärme verbreiteten.
Bei dieser Rettungsaktion wurden allerdings die Brustfedern des Vogels ein bisschen versengt. Die heilige Familie aber konnte in Ruhe schlafen.
Seitdem sind alle Rotkehlchen an ihren leuchtend roten Brustfedern zu erkennen.

The holy family had fallen asleep exhausted on Christmas Eve and the fire threatened to extinguish. This saw a small, gray bird. He quickly flew down from the roof to the fire and fanned back and forth with his wings until the fire's flames flared up again and the fire spread crackling warmth again.
In this rescue operation, however, the bird's chest feathers were scorched a bit. But the holy family could sleep in peace.
Since then, all robins have been recognisable by their bright red chest feathers.
That we find a poppy beautiful means that we are less alone, that we are more deeply inserted into existence than the course of a single life would lead us to believe. (John Berger)

Taken a year ago, more or less, when Covid-19 was simply an epidemic...my word, how the world has changed since then. We’re all armchair epidemiologists now, with a firmer grasp of the medical science and stats than the politicians (or so we think) and the MSM have got us worried sh1tless.
Currently we’re in lockdown v3 with a provisional end date of mid March....hah! Let’s see shall we?
Meanwhile I’m writing this at 1.45am with one foot in a bucket of ice water as my ankle RA has flared up and I’m waiting for my meds to kick in.

Raglan Castle is a late medieval fortress in the county of Monmouthshire in south Wales. It's thanks to Sir William ap Thomas, the ‘blue knight of Gwent’, for the moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace. His son Sir William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, created the gatehouse with its flared ‘machicolations’.
These stone arches allowed missiles to be rained down on attackers. But Raglan came 150 years later than the turbulent heyday of castle-building. It was designed to impress as much as to intimidate.
With most shortlines generally operating on weekdays, I had to take advantage of an entire Wednesday off work yesterday. Initially I had planned to head east to Delaware on good authority that ESPN would run a blue and yellow trio out of Wilsmere, but when I punched this into the GPS I must've had a brainfart of some sort, as it began taking me west towards the MMID. By the time I noticed my mistake I was already half way to Union Bridge, so turning around would've been of a low mental standard. Instead I caught up to UBHF at Thurmont, where I was very pleasantly surprised to see a lashup of three flared 40's and a pair of oldies in tow, lined up with the 2060 facing east for the return. After a westbound chase to Highfield, I set up in Sabillasville after scoping out all the possible eastbound angles and settled for this winner. A nerve-wracking two hours later, and surely not long before the shadows consumed the ROW, the screaming dynamics of the MMID quintet could be heard roaring down the mountain, and a scene for the ages was converted into pixels.
Tiny and active sunbird of forest edges, parks, and gardens; the most common urban sunbird throughout most of its expansive distribution; ranges from Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Lesser Sundas. Both sexes have a plain olive back, a yellow belly, and white tail edges that are flared out in flight. The male flashes an iridescent blue throat while the female has a yellow throat and eyebrow. Female Brown-throated Sunbird also has a yellow belly, but it is larger with a thicker bill and lacks the white tail patches of Ornate. Gives a rising “dwee”, a familiar sound even in cities. Formerly grouped with other, closely related species under “Olive-backed Sunbird.” (eBird)

We saw these lovely birds everywhere, dipping into the flowers just like hummingbirds. Beautiful and very active, this male decided to show off his beautiful gorget for me (or perhaps the lady sunbird nearby). His curved bill fits neatly into the Bird of Paradise flowers that he is perched on.

"Sacred Datura is an easy plant to identify and a fabulous flower to gaze on. Leaves are up to 10 inches long, flared trumpet flowers are 5-9 inches long, and the overall plant is often several feet high and a sprawling four or five feet across.
Stanley Welsh, author of A Utah Flora, has this to say about Datura wrightii: "The flowers are the largest of any native plant in Utah, and are sweetly scented. The herbage smells like a wet dog".
"Datura" apparently comes from either the Arabic "Tatorah", the Hindustani "Dhatura", or the Latin "dare". According to Harrington (in his Edible Native Plants of the Rocky Mountains) "Jimsonweed "is a corruption of "Jamestown Weed", a name given to a related Datura that poisoned a number of soldiers in Jamestown in 1676."

Festive Coquette males boast elegant, green cheek tufts which are tipped with white. During courtship these tufts are flared outward and the male bows his head before the female, exposing a patch of pale blue bare skin on his crown. Feeds on a wide variety of flowers at almost any level, and regularly visits feeders in some areas. Cypress trees fascinate me, and I think it is the way the interesting flared trunks of the trees rise up out of the water that I like best. I don’t know of another tree that does it quite like that. These are Bald Cypress trees at Reelfoot Lake in Western Tennessee. This is just a study of one of those cypress trunks, complete with what are called cypress knees, the vertical parts that poke up around the base. This is a single shot, 25 seconds at f/18 in very low light.
