The Flame Skimmer or Firecracker Skimmer (Libellula saturata) is a common dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, native to western North America.

Male Flame Skimmers are known for their entirely red or dark orange body, this includes eyes, legs, and even wing veins. Females are usually a medium or darker brown with some thin, yellow markings. This particular type of skimmer varies in size but is generally measured somewhere between two and three inches long. These naiads are known for being rather large and chubby-looking due to their rounded abdomen. They are covered with hair but, unlike most young dragonflies, they lack hooks or spines.

[Explored, thanks!] I've been wanting to do one of these for a while. Liked this one for the vortex structure in the gas and the clean burn front.

7/19/2010: Theme: Heat.

While preparing for the "Shisha" gathering, I found myself staring at the flames. I grabbed the camera and captured the moment :)

OK, this one grew on me, so it's a keeper. I've removed the other photo from the pool.

Oil slick at the park--just happens to be perfectly timed with the rainbow assignment at Take a class with Dave.

"1. The Rainbow - Take a shot full of vivid colors. At a minimum, we must be able to clearly identify at least three of the following colors in the photo: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple (I refuse to acknowledge indigo and violet as separate colors ;-)."

But they are, Dave.
