Work in progress photos of the prototype of terrain piece for Flames of War strategy tabletop game

Gingko bonsai are grown for a number of reasons, including foliage display, rough bark in some cultivars, and rarely, ramification. These trees are usually upright, shaped like a flame. Doing something different is difficult, because gingko don’t lend themselves to elaborate styling.

There are interesting cultivars available. This one is a Gingko Biloba Mariken. This cultivar was generated from a witches broom a Dutch nurseryman found growing on a gingko in the late 90s. Marikens are often grafted on to standards. By nature, they are low and slow growing. My tree was not grafted. If you look carefully at the picture, you can see the trunk is completely horizontal. Then, there is a single branch that rises above the soil. This is a good variation on the gingko theme.

No point to this series. I like flames, I think they are beautiful and meaningful somehow, in a way we don't really understand. They can warm me when all of life is frozen and dead. It penetrates my skin and roasts my cold and hardened heart, giving me a bit of warmth to dissipate the gray winter blizzard surrounding my soul.
