July Scavenger Hunt: 17 - That Should Have Been Thrown Out Long Ago

Two weeks after we go out of the world cup the flags are still up in Nottingham

In the United States perhaps even more than in other countries it's hard to go far without seeing flags flying.

And perhaps it's not surprising that a city like Gettysburg is even more fond of displaying the stars and stripes than the average city.

Traditionally, prayer flags come in sets of five: one in each of five colors. The five colors are arranged from left to right in a specific order: blue, white, red, green, and yellow. The five colors represent the elements and the Five Pure Lights. Different elements are associated with different colors for specific traditions, purposes and sadhana. Blue symbolizes the sky and space, white symbolizes the air and wind, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth. According to Traditional Tibetan medicine, health and harmony are produced through the balance of the five elements.

Another one from the ferry trip last Monday. It's got me feeling all patriotic, and I'm not even Canadian.

Prayer flags.

Tibetan prayer flags are colorful panels or rectangular cloths often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks in the Himalayas to bless the surrounding countryside. Unknown in other branches of Buddhism, prayer flags are believed to have originated with the original Bön religion, which predated Buddhism in Tibet.
