And its (probably) most photographed architectural feature: the central dome in the great entrance hall. This part of the museum is the original, and was built 1837-1843, designed by George Basevi.
The museum has seen many later additions, the latest in 2004 and when I visited the museum I entered through its more modern facilities, which did not make quite the same impact and I had to traverse more or less the whole museum to get to this vantage-point. But then again, it is a museum well worth traversing, because there is quite a lot to see on the way.

One of the pubs at Castor, this looks to be quite food-based. Nice bit of thatch. Castor is driving distance for me so testing the pubs out is a bit tricky. I should just pop in one day for an orange juice or similar.

Fitzwilliam Museum is the art and antiquities museum of the University of Cambridge. And this ceiling caught my attention.
An architecture post after a very long time.
My son played football v Hemsworth last night and I looked at possible locations to photograph any passing trains while he was warming up. In the end, it turned out the ground was a 2 minute walk from Fitzwilliam station, so that seemed the logical place to go. In the 45 minutes I was there a freightliner, 2 91, an Azuma, a couple of Voyagers and local services passed, before the light finally faded.
