Another observation with the Common Tern chicks (with Scooter and Tyke) who both were/are dependent on parental food provisioning, found that the brood size and sibling competition affected their survival and ultimately their well-being.
With Scooter and Tyke, the competition for food and the considerable amount of energy expended to chase down the landing parent, played a significant role and seemed to have a direct impact on their survival, especially when hierarchies are based on hatching rank and sex. Parents will favor one chick over the other and it was evident that Scooter was favored. I thought eventually "Tyke" would get something to eat by the time I left (was there for over 4 hours) -- I thought wrong. The misconception that both parents will equally feed is not the case. It is the eldest chick who dominates the brood, more often times it is the male due to the larger physique and being the first hatched.
Kleptoparasitism (stealing food), is common between siblings as well as other adults who steal from the parent feeding their chicks.
As cute as this photograph is of Scooter, there was a lot of competition going on between him and Tyke. I do think the ultimate cause of "Tyke's" death was starvation and dehydration, weakened to the point when the injury was inflicted by another Adult Common Tern, (happened a day later) was the nail in his coffin. As unfortunate and sad as this is, it is the survival of the fittest, eldest and sex of chick.

(1955, UK Corgi 1961)
Quite a find, an English disaster novel in the Wells/Wyndham tradition. Experiments on animal intelligence produce the "Paggets": pamice, parats, pacats and padogs. The cunning little devils manage to destroy our fragile civilization almost overnight with their co-ordinated attacks, even though they also fight amongst themselves.
Reminiscent of Terry Nation's Survivors but with jarring fifties sexism in that every woman's appearance is minutely detailed, although to give the author his due most of the women turn out to be real characters. The hero is a visiting American, which makes me wonder whether this book was written for the US market or with a film in mind.
A good old-fashioned page-turner describing the breakdown of society well, with tense set-pieces.

Team Where's Wally finishes Survival of the Fittest 2012. Saturday I attempted and completed the Survival of the Fittest at the legendary Battersea Power Station in London. A 10k route linking the Power Station site and Battersea Park. 21 obstacle zones, which included plenty of mud, lots of climbing and sliding and very cold water at times. At one point you were asked to carry sand bags inside the Power Station which wasn't comfortable or nice. Time 01HR 44MIN 44SEC highly recommend this.
