Heaven joined us for a small group shoot at the Caldwell Underpass on a lovely day in May 2021. I tend to shoot with Heaven about once a year (she is very busy); I know that she will come prepared, with a great attitude and plenty of looks. No photoshoot--not even a fitness shoot--is complete without a close-up of the model, in my humble opinion. This is of lovely Alyssa, taken at Fitness 1 in north Phoenix on 5/14/17.
A two-light setup here. The main light was an Alien Bees DigiBee800, camera left, fired into a gridded Chimera 14x56 strip bank, power not recorded. The rim light was a DigiBee800 with a standard 7" reflector and a 20° grid in front. The light was set about 1.5 stops brighter than the main light and was positioned behind Alyssa and to her left, about seven feet away. A flat, silver reflector was below her to fill shadows in her face.
Finished with a Topaz Classic Collection Soft Focus I filter at 70% opacity. Canon 6D and Canon 100mm f2.8L macro IS lens. ISO 200, f14 at 1/160 second.

These photos are from a small group shoot we did in the gritty section of Freak Alley on a steaming hot day in July 2021. Jennifer is one of my go to models - always up for an adventure. Very fit, toned, photogenic, funny, and extremely intelligent and adventurous. I think she was on her way or coming from a fitness class, so we put her to the test. Jennifer was able to pull off poses that made my body hurt just watching. I had a brief amount of time to shoot with her before she was modelnapped - grrrr, but there will be a next time.

The studio that I go to is in this amazing old building and it has some amazing stair cases, landings and corridors. And I have been meaning to use them for a while but never had the right idea or concept that I thought would fit it. Until now…
We had some good fun here as there is very little space, I had to either climb between the stair cases or stand on top of a railing or like in this one get right underneath the rail so I could get an good angle.
In post, I increased the clarity and sharpness as I wanted to go for a little gritty look. I then de-saturated the image and bought the vibrance back up a little. And then finally added some vignetting in lightroom.

I recently had an opportunity to work with an awesome new model and she wanted to do a fitness shoot, never done one so I thought why not, what have a got to loose…some parts of the shoot went very well and I have got some good images but due to my lack of experience with studio lighting (still learning) I had missed some great opportunities, wont lie, I am a bit disappointed but oh well there is always next time…lol
I wanted to show the muscle definition that this young lady had and wanted to use as less light as possible…for this image I decided to use my LED tube, I forgot how bright this tube is and when combined that we some baby oil, it really brighten the stomach area up.
In post I had to reduced the highlights a bit, along with the blacks and brought the exposure down on the stomach too, I might have bought it down a little to much but could not be bothered to change it…lol. I increased the sharpness and radial filter to have the vignetting around the angle of the body.

Another trip down Memory Lane ...
These photos are from a shoot I did way back in September 2003; I was just starting out with digital cameras and working with models. I was equally clueless in both areas. I think I was using a Olympus and a Kodak digital camera. I also noticed that back at that time I was doing a lot of very tight close-ups to the detriment of others. Lessons learned.
The model here is a young lady named Anna; she was one of favorite models back then. Always fun to shoot with - great personality, sweet and sassy, gorgeous body, and very sharp. We didn't have themes back then, we just let the mood decide her outfits - and apparently this included a fitness shoot.
I took these photos at Westchester Lagoon, Anchorage, Alaska on a gorgeous late afternoon in September 2003. I miss those days!

My last shot of lovely Alyssa at Fitness 1 in north Phoenix on 5/14/17. Got some wonderful pix from this shoot and Alyssa is great to work with! She did her own makeup and hair for this shoot. I lit Alyssa with a Digibee800 shot into a 14"x56" gridded Chimera softbox, power not recorded. The light was directly in front of her and slightly above head height. The rim light was a Digibee800 about shoulder height, camera right. It had a 20-degree grid in the front. Power not recorded. Both Digibees were triggered with Pocket Wizards.
Shot with a Canon 70D and Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens at 33mm. ISO 200, f5.6 at 1/250 second. Finished with an onOne Effects Sunshine Glow layer (protect highlights 32, protect shadows 32, protect skin 50).

The fill light was a Digibee800 above Alyssa's shoulder height, and just right of me. It was modified with a 9"x36" gridded Chimera softbox, power not recorded. Both Digibees were triggered with Pocket Wizards.
Shot with a Canon 70D and Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens at 43mm. ISO 200, f7.1 at 1/250 second. Finished with an onOne Effects Glow Hollywood Glow (saturation 5) layer at 50% opacity.
