Being a father is more than a dream come true. But being a Fit Father is a responsibility I owe to myself, our son, and my friend that passed away when I was 16 years old. Between the ages of 18-35, I worked in the Parks and Recreation field. If you believe in the African proverb, it takes a village to raise a child, then know that I was doing so by encouraging youth to learn and grow through sports programs, summer camps, after-school activities, as well as mentorships. Years later, my wife and I were blessed with a son whom we named Adam. Working in an internationally diverse community just outside of Washington DC, Adam met people from around the world. Thus, I was also able to help raise him with the values that I hold dear to my heart – respect for humanity and an appreciation for our diversity. Today, Adam is a smiling boy that loves to meet new faces. We enjoy taking him to the park, the beach, and other places where he can explore and learn. As each day passes, I continue to be reminded that life is precious.

This is my story, and I’m living a Fit Fathers lifestyle.

I’m very proud of my son, Jamal 29, who now has his own seed (my Grand Prince Elijah Hunter) that he’s doing an amazing job raising and being a great young very responsible Fit Father. I’m so happy that my late wife Patricia and I raised both of our kids well and passed the torch to carry out the Hunter Family legacy. Father knows best! ❤💯👊🙏💪

Fatherhood is so much more than just YOUR child as a singular entity. It’s the other lives that she or he touches. Whether it’s a positive or negative behavior you directly impact them in addition to their peers. I like to instill teamwork and values that will help my daughter be able to build long lasting relationships as well as learning from and influencing her friends constructively. Finding common ground with your kids is important and lessons as it relates to appreciating hard work are universal. If they learn how to work diligently towards the principles of fitness, arts, science, math, reading, etc., they will be able to apply that equivalent effort to various avenues within their lifecycle. So to me, I am not just raising my daughter to be great. I am raising her to motivate and inspire her classmates and friends within the community too. Each 1 Teach 1.

The meaning of fatherhood to me translates to leadership. As Fit Fathers, we are our child's first heroes, role models, and ultimate protectors. As a father of three strong and intelligent sons, I know how heavy my responsibilities are and recognize the importance of leading by example. I learned early that my kids are always watching me, so I make conscious decisions to move with integrity, confidence, and love. For instance, I discipline them when they disobey; I hug them when they are sad; I allow them to cry, but I also encourage them to wipe their tears and learn from the situation that triggered that emotion.

Fatherhood is one of the most complex roles a man can have but also the most rewarding. The communication, friendship, and love I have with my sons are unconditional. They are my best friends and confidants. My boys are fully aware that I won't just point them in the right direction but will lead them in the right direction. Fatherhood is leadership in the first degree.

When I ponder on what it means to be a Fit Father I think of the word “serve.” Serve, like “love” has so many connotations such as being present when your children take their first step. Other shining examples include offering words of wisdom, taking care of them when they are ill, holding them tightly during hard times and celebrating during good times. Fathers offer so much value within the family structure, yet the greatest asset for each is to be a shining example.

When we serve we are setting the bar high in a positive manner and that is what leaders do. Being a great leader for your family will do so much for your children. You may not know it but they watch everything that we do and strive to be just like us. Leading by example will allow them to carry your life lessons into their own character traits. Yes, every dad should be a leader and a server.
