The sky was covered with dark clouds and I thought it would be impossible to see the first sunrise of the year, but this was the moment when the first light peeked through the gaps in the clouds.

The sun climbed higher, bathing the rolling hills of Kawachi Pass in brilliant golden light. The contrast between the vivid blue sky and the glowing pampas grass was simply breathtaking. The trail along the ridge offers one of the best panoramic views in the region.

I couldn't make it 3 from 3 sunrise in a row, This one is one of my favourite from the 1st sunrise of the year. I really like the still water at your feet and the waves crashing over the rocks further out!

Witnessing Hatsuhinode (the first sunrise of the year) from the rolling hills of Kawachi Pass in Nagasaki. The morning light turned the silver grass into a sea of gold, signaling a warm start to the new year.

Blue hour transitions to dawn, which begins its transition to sunrise. A magical moment for those of us that chase the morning light. The first twilight of 2014 did not fail this year.
North Beach, MD 1/1/14
No 5 from my First Light project
It is but a brief moment that we may enjoy greeting the coming of the new day, and most of us are either sleeping, or in a rush to get ourselves ready for the daily grind. On this particular morning, perhaps, the mention of "hangover" needs not be said? This crazy photographer not only celebrated NYE as I greeted 2014 and partied past midnight, but awoke early enough to drive an hour to catch the first light of 2014. Yes, for those who may ask, it was worth the sacrifice!
So, San Fran has Alamo Square and its ubiquitous Sisters. Well, North Beach has this, mine and my friend Reggie's version that I shall call the Bay Brothers. As cosmopolitan as North Beach is, I doubt that they will ever be as popular as their SF kin.

Bright sunlight, 2 minutes at ISO 200 and f/18 using my favorite ND combo, the Lee Big Stopper and the Singh Ray Daryl Benson RGND.
I have a hard time leaving North Beach without a cliche pier comp.
Even though my good friend and shooting partner, Reggie Bishop, was not with me on this morning, I thought it appropriate to add him for 2 reasons. One, he texted me today asking me to upload something, and two, North Beach is one of his favorite locations. This one is for you, buddy!
