I am happy:) My second front page, and in a row!
*
Thank you all, you are all amazing and I think I have learned a lot here, been inspired from your amazing photos, and I am not on flickr for so long (not a year), and my experience with camera is very very short. I still have a lot to learn! Never stop shooting!
(This maybe sounded like winning an Oscar and then thanking your fans;) haha,
but this makes me really happy. Few months ago I didn't even know what aperture is:)
This is the firstpage of this 30 day challenge...I used a quick sketch I made of today's portrait for another Sktchy challenge. I find that if I draw first, the lines of the face come more easily when I'm 'driving' the sewing macine needle. I can also audition a palette of color.

NEW SCHOOL MATERIALS TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT VETERANS

Veterans’ charity Poppyscotland and Learning and Teaching Scotland today (14 September) launched the second phase of a series of internet-based materials to revolutionise the way pupils learn about veterans, remembrance and conflict.
Following the success in 2008 of Sowing the Poppy Seed, Poppyscotland, new materials have been added for children aged three to eight years old, including a contemporary film for younger children, in which ‘the Poppy’ is interviewed as part of a chat show.
To mark the launch of these new materials, the organizations are also holding a national poetry competition for school pupils, where children are asked to take inspiration from the work of acclaimed war photographer, Robert Wilson. The thought-provoking images were taken by Robert Wilson in Iraq and Afghanistan and will act as a stimulus for the aspiring poets.
Pupils from Hermitage Park Primary and James Gillespie High attended the launch at the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh, where they met renowned Army poet, Lieutenant Colonel J B Brown, Commanding Officer 7 Royal Logistics Corps. JB has served in many operational tours, including Northern Ireland and Iraq, and was featured in the Sunday Times in 2008 as one of a new generation of ‘soldier-poets.’
Poppyscotland Chief Executive, Ian McGregor, said: “The response from schools across Scotland last year was extremely positive and we are delighted to be expanding on the project this year. It is vital that young people know about conflicts, remembrance and the role of veterans in their communities. The additional materials and the poetry competition will enable pupils to learn in a way that is both creative and engaging.”
Sowing the Poppy Seed was developed by Poppyscotland and Learning and Teaching Scotland in conjunction with Determined to Succeed, Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory and the Royal British Legion Scotland. The materials include new planning documents, challenges, posters, poppy seeds and teachers’ notes. In addition, there will be additional archive footage and subtitles for all films, as well as activity guides and research activities to support teachers.
Anne Jardine, from Learning and Teaching Scotland, spoke at the event of the importance of engaging children through learning. She said: “The fantastic new materials available through Poppyscotland in conjunction with LTS and Determined to Succeed support the values, principles and practice of Curriculum for Excellence by offering children engaging and motivating learning opportunities linked to the world around them.
“The pupils who attended the launch today will be able to take their new knowledge back to school and share their experience with their fellow pupils from P4 up to S3, further broadening the reach of these innovative learning materials. There will also be opportunities for them to take responsibility for involving, organising and perhaps mentoring their school in the Poppy Poetry competition.”

LOTHIAN SCHOOL PUPILS ATTEND PREMIERE OF FILM BASED ON POIGNANT EXPERIENCES ON FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLEFIELD TOUR
Ex-Service charity Poppyscotland and Learning and Teaching Scotland today (7 September) held a special screening of a new 20-minute film, which follows the physical and emotional journey of six school pupils during a First World War battlefield tour in Belgium and Northern France.
The six pupils from Dunbar Grammar School were among a group of 30 to attend a special screening of The Journey at the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh. The film was made by Poppyscotland in May 2010 as part of the charity’s education project, Sowing the Poppy seed, which aims to transform the way pupils learn about veterans, remembrance and conflict. A mix of fact and opinion, the film provides a starting point for debate about the First World War and conflict in general.
A DVD will be sent to every school and college in Scotland, featuring The Journey and 32 other films, and includes subtitles in English and Gaelic. The film will also be available online, along with a series of internet-based materials including planning documents, challenges and teachers’ notes. Also, following the success of the charity’s Poppy Poetry competition for schools in 2009, a new competition will be held this year, in conjunction with the Scottish Poetry Library, extended to older children and adults in further and higher education.
Chief Executive Ian McGregor said: “We are very proud of our education project. In order for Poppyscotland to continue its work in the future, it is vital that as they grow up young people have an understanding of the difficult and demanding issues that war and remembrance raise.
“Over the past two years Sowing the Poppy seed has provided both pupils and teachers with a variety of creative and engaging learning opportunities and we are confident that this year’s resources, including the powerful DVD, will be a valued asset to schools and colleges across Scotland.”
Anne Jardine, Director, Learning and Community at Learning and Teaching Scotland, added: “Sowing the Poppy seed is a superb educational resource that aligns with the philosophy of Curriculum for Excellence. It allows teachers and learners to make meaningful connections across the curriculum, using a powerful and emotive subject matter.”

The Limasawa story was written by a Jesuit priest, Fr. Francisco Combes. It appeared in his book, Historia de Mindanao y Jolo...which was published in Madrid in 1667. He had two sources, the account of Magellan's voyage written by Gian Battista Ramusio which for a very long time was mistakenly thought to be by Antonio Pigafetta. As indeed Combes so thought. His other source was Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas whose secondhand account of the anchorage at Mazaua was faithful to the actual event. Only Pigafetta and Herrera ever wrote on the Easter week at Mazaua, an island-port. Ramusio's story was egregiously wrong. He wrote the anchorage was Butuan where Magellan's fleet stayed during the Easter week. The Ramusio version Combes got does not mention any mass. He only mentions a cross being planted on a hill in Butuan. The first three sentences of Fr. Miguel A. Bernad's translation is shown above. The rest will be shown in the second frame.

captainkimo.com/hdr-photographygoogle
I had my HDR Photography Blog for a little over two years now. Well actually, I had the CaptainKimo.com blog for over three. For the first year this blog was all about fishing, back then I was big into fishing. I still am now, but these days I spend more time shooting than I do casting. Hence the URL/domain name CaptainKimo.com, for those of you who ever wondered about the name :)
One of my goals, after switching the topic of my blog, was to get listed on the first page of Google for the keyword "HDR Photography." It took me a year and a half to show up on the second page. After months of sitting on page two, Google finally moved me up to primetime.
Being listed on the first page amoung millions of other HDR photography websites and blogs tells me one thing, my HDR photos kick-ass ;), or to put it more modestly, I'm doing something right with my photos and people enjoy coming back to see what's new.
With that said, I want to give a shout-out to everyone who has supported me and my blog, thank you!

i am so glad i picked an image with a limited range of colours for my first attempt - i have a very small selection of threads with me and i would not have been able to do the thread match if it had been more colourful - as it is i had to add colour to some threads with my watercolour crayons to get them closer
The three books that have had the greatest impact on me. I can honestly say that each of these books has altered the way I look at myself. The top one is a dictionary. Can anyone guess what the other two are? You can read the first lines of both books in the full size version.
