mile 24-25. I was in tons of pain and was alternating between jogging and power-walking at this point ... but I saw the photog up ahead and hammed it up as best as I could for the cam ... then immediately afterwards resumed to my limping/jogging/power-walking. :P
we were both very happy, but in SO much pain when we took this picture! we had just crossed the finishline, and were limping all over the finishers' grounds from the Team in Training tent, to the finishers' booth (to get our t-shirts & medals), to the food court, to the photobooth, back to the TNT tent, and then (after eating & resting), to the shuttle to take us back to our hotels.
the finishline: a 2 second moment; a culmination of 4 months of endurance training, and of breaking down mental & physical barriers. it is a moment which ends a 5 and a half hour journey & personal battle with your body & mind. the finishline for me embodied a powerful and emotional surge of excitement, relief, happiness, and pride & accomlishment. I had tears in my eyes ... for relief that the pain that had overwhelmed my legs and feet were over, and for the absolute joy of accomplishing this goal.
24 year old Dennis Brands crossing the finish line in 2:51 - nice! And this was his first marathon.

There are so many pictures I could make for today's shot...I did dozens of them...but the one I'm choosing was taken from the sidelines mere seconds after I'd crossed my first marathon finish line.
We ran the whole thing together and stuck together when things got tough, even though we'd promised to separate and run our own race when it became apparent that one couldn't keep up.
About 1/2 way through we realized that we needed each other more than we cared about a finishing time.
I met her through running...and now I consider her more than a good friend. I know that no matter what direction our lives take us we we always have the knowledge and memory of who we crossed our first marathon finish line with...and that will never, ever go away.

Running is costume is fun. Finding a running buddy who also likes to run in costume is even better.
This was right before my first full marathon in the Redwoods, Humboldt Redwoods State park, Northern California. That is me, Linda Tesman (her second marathon) and Don McDonnel (his first marathon also). We all trained together for this race.

A pit stop in Grand Forks for some serisou shopping before heading off to Fargo for my very first MARATHON!!
may 2, 2010, long branch, n.j. -- sam starting, sam at the midway point, sam crossing the finish line, and sam after completing the new jersey marathon -- his first marathon ever! his time: five hours and 37 minutes. next time, we will bring a baseball cap or at least remember to use the sunscreen we brought.
my poor feet! what's sad, is they weren't even as swollen as they were going to get when this photo was taken.
bill, bouv and the boston red sox. (by the way, bill is a YANKEE fan, but true to his word, if he hit his fundraising goal, he had promised to wear red sox gear during the run because bouv was such a sox fan). this is why bill is one of my best friends.
