Pilliga Scrub, Timmallallie National Park, Sculpture Walk: 'First Lesson' by Brett Garling: “…see it as a landscape painting as well as a sculpture”. (cast sculpture) (November 2011)
"Each sculpture is the result of an artist collaborating with local Aboriginal Elders and young people on a piece that tells a story of local Aboriginal history and culture." www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/...
This collection of commissioned sculptures has been installed along the high side of a gorge or valley in the Timmallallie National Park in the Pilliga Scrub. The pieces range from the representational to the abstract. I love the way this piece, father & child, plays with that typical stance, and commands the outlook at the lookout.
The best reference to it I have found really gives you a flavour of the whole: www.retiredaussies.com/ColinsHome%20Page/GreatWalks/NSW/P...

E is told by her teacher to swim down and get the colored ring. She actually is able to do this. This is her second swimming lesson. Can you tell we're impressed??
Now we're almost there. New image on the way and the puzzle is almost complete.
This is the "First Lesson" published on 1865 by mr. George Baxter after a french painting from SB Halle. It is a Baxter print produced with 13 color blocks – a XIX century color print that combines wood engraving and intaglio (or lithography) in an amazing technique.
I love this print. The favorite from my collection.
Richard Mole Antique Dealers & Restorers still has another copy:
E's friend Bella opens her eyes underwater and gets the ring. E is the little one on the right in the green suit.

“First Lesson: Dhayaanduul Waanda” by Brett Garling. “Coming up onto the escarpment and looking down into the gorge, it was almost breath-taking. I thought, well, where I was actually standing was the place where my sculpture was to be situated. […] The site was a sacred Aboriginal site, but what particularly took my interest was that it was used as an Aboriginal hunting ground and cap site. I came up with the idea of a father teaching his son about the gorge and its uses as far as hunting. I came up with the idea of the young child sitting on the father’s shoulders and him sitting on top of the gorge, pointing down into it.” [“Sculptures in the Scrub”, The Pilliga, NSW]
