The Arizona Central Railroad, a true gem and reflection of past American railroading, consists of 38 miles of track snaking through Arizona desert landscape, seemingly forgotten by time. Three first generation GPs were the sole power to traverse these canyons for many years, with growth in freight business increasing their use to 3-5 runs weekly. The higher carloads have also raised the demand for more power, and thus a second set of newer GPs have arrived on the property last week, after the Southwestern Railroad provided a first set in August 2019 to complement the classics. With four 2nd Gen units now in service for AZCR, it is unclear if a lashup like this will remain a familiar sight. For me, documenting this breathtaking operation to the max was a no-brainer, and so for two weeks, beige and blue was all my shutter would see. Here is the first of the series, three coal loads for Clarkdale descending along the Verde River between Trestle Tank and Government Canyon.

I thought it would be fun to participate in the Flickr phenomenon "What's In Your Bag?" I typically only carry a single camera and lens around at a time, but I keep a lot of this stuff in a bag in my car on trips, including a tripod and moleskine journal.
