In honor of Madonna’s 66th birthday today, we are highlighting the The Pyramid Club on Avenue A in the East Village, which first opened in 1979 and soon became a hangout for struggling artists, musicians and drag queens.

Our world-traveling guest Piglet (see Piglet's World Tour) decided he wanted to join us for Aids Walk!

We warned him it would be quite a long walk (10 kilometers or 6.2 miles), but he didn't seem to think it would be a big deal. Indeed, Piglet seemed to have more endurance than anyone else on the walk. He never got tired, or complained even once. He just kept on moving! In fact, it was hard to keep him still long enough to take a picture of him, but we managed to get an opportunity during a point where walkers had to wait for traffic to pass. He even managed to get someone to sponsor him $25 for walking!! (Ok, ok...it was me).

Article and picture from the AU Tunnel: Twenty-five years after the first AIDS outbreak, Americans are still fighting to find a cure. Even though awareness is at an all time high, HIV rates in the District of Columbia more than double the national average. Nearly three months ago, District officials had implemented an HIV campaign to promote sexual health, awareness, and prevention.

Approximately 20,000 oral-swab test kits were given to hospitals, clinics, and non-profit organizations free of cost, in order to support the city-wide effort to encourage HIV testing for individuals ranging from 14 to 84 years old. During a Task Force Meeting on HIV and AIDS, the haunting reality that DC has one of the highest HIV rates in the country was revealed. As a result, the city aspires to incorporate HIV testing within everyday healthcare routines, because people who are aware of their health tend to prevent further transmission and seek medical attention.

American University students participated in the AIDS Walk Washington on October 7, 2006.

"I am not particularly active in the AIDs cause but i thought it was a good turnout considering it was such a miserable day and it really showed the enthusiasm that people have in helping with AIDs awareness," said Lauren Renner, a freshman in the Kogod School of Business.

The walk raised a total of $601,576 for the HIV/AIDS programs at the Whitman-Walker Clinic.

In the months to come, the city plans to place $60,000 into prevention. This includes the distribution of one million condoms to various bars, restaurants, hotels, and liquor stores. As for awareness at AU, condom machines are being placed in residential halls to promote good health and prevention within the university community.

Patrick's message is pretty much what many artists on Castro Street would agree with.

He also likes to quote Ansel Adams: "You don't take a photograph, you make it."

Patrick's advice to his younger self: "Be a little more confident, believe in yourself.

"Take advice from older people!"

Patrick, 54y/o, was found HIV positive during 1994-98 which makes him a 20 year long term HIV survivor.

His older brother, however, passed away in 1994 because he didn't tolerate the AZT drug. It was still in its experimental stage back then.

Patrick is still fighting several health issues. He mentioned getting a shot straight in his eyeball just a week and a half ago.

We had a conversation also about his photography. He told me the stories behind some of the photographs he was trying to sell on Castro Street.

SEPTEMBER-SISTER BOOM BOOM runs for SUPERVISOR OF SAN FRANCISCO- JACK FERTIG gains over 23,000 votes ALMOST winning a seat on the BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

1987-SISTERS organize a protest against the POPE who visits SAN FRANCISCO. SISTERS want the POPE to stop anti-gay hate, promote use of condoms, & stop religious dogma...

The SAN FRANCISCO MAIN PUBLIC LIBRARY has a display of artifacts and historical items from the SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE.

The SISTERS are a big part of SAN FRANCISCO history, as well as GAY history. They were the first to do 'humorous gender drag' which was different from the serious 'drag' scene.

The SISTERS were first and formost, an organization promoting acceptance, and having fun. They also were the first organization to make sure SAFE SEX information was distributed.

Many fund raisers were held so the SISTERS would have funds to publish the PLAY FAIR 'safe sex' brochure' as well as various social issues such as helping the gay Cuban refugees that came to the USA.

The simplest and quickest way to make a single loaf (for those who are desirous, but reluctant, to try bread baking) is in a small food processor/chopper/blender. (This loaf's for a friend.) Most processor cookbooks contain a recipe, and there are plenty to be found online (search "food processor bread").

Recipe:

Scant 1 c. water.

2.5 c. flour (here, the half cup is whole wheat)

1 t. dried yeast

1 t. salt

I find that a spray or dribble of oil in container FIRST, aids in handling and cleaning.

Blend till it cleans the bowl and forms ball (as here).

Dump out on lightly-floured counter--give few quick kneads. Let rise till double; punch down, few quick kneads, shape and place in oiled loaf pan. Rise till even, or just above, rim and bake in moderate-to-hot oven for 30-35minutes. Let cool in pan for 5 min. and tap out. If desired, return loaf alone to oven for another 3-5 min. to crisp bottom. (The latter a James Beard tip [1973].)

loud noises upstairs at noon (nothing unusual)....and then they came to get him. he was screaming. i heard noises upstairs. i heard him

talking loudly, i heard them holding him, fighting him.. i heard him screaming and pleading... the staircase

was full of his voice, of them, trying to hold him down, trying to calm him down, but he'd go on saying

he hadn't done any harm to anyone, he hadn't hurt anyone, he'd just want to stay in his room..

it was more and more who came, but they couldn't shut him down..police, first-aids, tranquilizers, parents.... and he kept on pleading to just leave him alone. i heard him through the ceiling, i heard him through the walls, the bathroom, the stairs....

and at the end he was just pleading and crying to let him get his things from his room...

and he was saying, all tranquilized, they had no right to do that, to maltreat him in this way....

it took them an hour to take him out of the appartment... .

..by then my stomach felt like chewing gum.
