A firm favourite with many armchair birders, the Robin is always a welcome sight in the garden. Being naturally confiding & curious, they'll often come in close & sit for a photo. I'll admit that this is sometimes a pleasant distraction, when a preferred subject is playing hard to get, as was the case here.

Such big firm tomatoes are ideal for a dish called Xihongshi Chao Jidan (西红柿炒鸡蛋, English: "scrambled eggs with tomatoes"). Softer tomatoes would turn to mush in the wok.

The ingredients of this extremely popular dish are one big firm tomato, four beaten eggs and one spring onion. Cut the tomato into small cubes and the spring onion into small pieces and in the meantime heat oil in a wok over high heat. Add the onions, then the tomatoes and finally the beaten eggs and stir everything while seasoning with salt and sugar. The whole thing has to go very quickly, but then the dish is already finished. It is served with or without rice.

The secret of this wonderfully simple but tasty dish is the sugar resp. its dosage. Ideally, people who are not familiar with the preparation wonder why this simple dish tastes so wonderfully delicious without realising that it is because of the sugar.

Austeros epitafios,

sombras, murmuraciones vagas

que se acogen, como gatos,

a la escueta caricia de la melancolía.

Lomagnupur mountain reflecting in a roadside pool. It helped that tourism was down during my visit. Otherwise, I may not have been able to pull over to make some of the photographs. There were not many pull-outs on the road, and virtually no shoulder; so no traffic was helpful in seeing ahead to make stops when possible. South Iceland, April 2021

Washington's North Head Lighthouse stands regally against the storms. Judging from other images I've seen, it's been spruced up nicely.

The first Japanese 35mm pentaprism SLR came on the market in 1957: the "Asahi Pentax". In the face of fierce competition from mirrorless cameras, Pentax continues to manufacture single lens reflexes with a glass prism finder, believing that an electronic finder cannot replace the experience of direct viewing on a ground-glass screen. With the K-3iii Monochrome (2023) they stick to this philosophy.

Here a view of the slow-speed dial of the original Asahi Pentax, taken by the Pentax K-3iii Monochrome.

The lens used is the magical SMC Pentax Soft f:2.2 85mm (ca.1985), together with its companion and contemporary, the Pentax Rear Converter-A 1.4x-L, giving a focal length of ca. 120mm. The lens was stopped down to its minimum aperture of f:5.6, resulting in an actual aperture of f:8 with the converter.

The K-3iii Mono was mounted on a tripod with a heavy ball-head plus a focussing-rail. A halogen lamp was reflected from the ceiling.

From top to bottom the subject as shown measures just under three inches.
