This photograph was taken in a traditional 'gassho' house (thatched A-frame house) in the Shirwaka-go World Heritage Site.
The view is looking down from the stairs, to the top surface of the screen which is suspended over the open hearth. This forces the heat back down into the ground floor.
In Japanese houses, visitors remove their outdoor shoes before stepping onto the wooden floors in slippers. These slippers are then taken off before stepping onto the tatami mats - such as those which surround the fire.

When I started at the college I saw they were having a staff and students art exhibition and that you could enter anything you had made. I knew straight away that i wanted to submit this firescreen I made for mum a few years ago. This giant cottage cross stitch was a labour of love when I made it, it was supposed to be a Christmas present but the problem I had was I wanted to stitch it in secret so she couldnt see it, this meant doing little bits in the bathroom when she thought I was in the shower, or trying to sneakily do bits in my bedroom if she thought I was doing homework. I didnt get it finished intime for Christmas so made her an "I O U" sign, she eventually got it almost the following Christmas when Dad had it framed into a fire screen and it stands infront of their coal fire when its not lit.
I have another picture almost the same but with autumn leaves which I would like to sew at some point when I have some time!

Set in the beautiful Artisan Hills at the gateway to the Yarra Valley, Dark Horse Café, Wine, and Produce capitulates the very essence of country charm.
Our licensed Café and our liquor and produce store overlooks two acres of landscaped gardens along with our ornamental lake. It is surrounded by a natural bushland setting making it a truly unique environment.

The same pattern, Olive and Rose' as in the firescreen but in kit format. Embroidery kits included sufficient coloured silks and cotton cloth on which the outline had been pounced and inked. A small part of the embroidery would have been started by the Firm's assistants to demonstrate the stitches to be used. This kit probably dates to around 1900, and has been part worked in darning stitch. This version has pale yellow flowers, deep green stems and dark red olives against a pale olive ground.
The silk cards are perhaps twelve years older.
Olive & Rose, designed by William Morris c 1880, was one of the Firm's most popular patterns. The kit was priced at £4 10s, which included stretching and mounting under glass.
Fire Screen, by John La Farge (1835-1910), ca. 1880-1885. Leaded opalescent glass with painted wood. Along with Louis Comfort Tiffany, he pioneered the use of opalescent glass in stained glass window manufacturing, revolutionizing the medium.
An early rival of Tiffany, the American painter and designer John La Farge used opalescent glass to create windows that looked unlike anything seen before. Here, he has used glass to decorate a fire screen that would have covered a fireplac when not in use. Each circle of the screen's glass is unique, its colors swimming beneath the surface in soft gradations and confetti-like chips.
