This firefly flew into my apartment and hung out in my lamp for a while. I finally had to take the lamp outside and flip it upside down to get him to fly out.

Yesterday I went out at night to photograph fireflies, which was something I had never done before. Fireflies reach their peak activity around this time in June and in the right places their displays are spectacular. It is like walking among dozens of shooting stars. I tried taking photos of the magic with long exposures. These were my favorites.<p><img src="http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature/image/144002796/original.jpg" style="margin-top:16px; border: 3px solid #333333;"></p><p><img src="http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature/image/144002795/original.jpg" style="border: 3px solid #333333;"></p>

You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep

'Cause they'd fill the open air and leave teardrops everywhere ...

The larvae of fireflies (beetles in the family Lampyridae) are easily recognized by their tiny heads on retractable necks, and by their shield-like dorsal plates. Lampyrids are also among the beetle grubs that use a retractable adhesive organ at the tip of their abdomen as a seventh leg when they walk. In some firefly species (trilobite beetles), the females retain their wingless, shield-backed grub shape even as reproductive adults.

The Sherman Firefly was a tank used by the United Kingdom in World War II. It was based on the US M4 Sherman but fitted with the powerful 3-inch (76.2 mm) calibre British 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon. Originally conceived as a stopgap until future British tank designs came into service, the Sherman Firefly became the most common vehicle with the 17-pounder in the war.

Though the British expected to have their own new tank models developed soon, British Major George Brighty championed the already-rejected idea of mounting the 17-pounder in the existing Sherman. With the help of Lieutenant Colonel Witheridge and despite official disapproval, he managed to get the concept accepted. This proved fortunate, as both the Challenger and Cromwell tank designs experienced difficulties and delays.

After the problem of getting the gun to fit in the Sherman's turret was solved, the Firefly was put into production in early 1944, in time to equip Field Marshal Montgomery's forces for the Normandy landings. It soon became highly valued as the only British tank capable of defeating the Panther and Tiger tanks it faced in Normandy at long range. In recognition of this, German tank and anti-tank gun crews were instructed to attack Fireflies first. Between 2,100 and 2,200 were manufactured before production wound down in 1945

This was an incredibly difficult picture to take. I've been trying for days (nights, actually). First, I have to watch a firefly until it stops flying and sets down on a leaf. That's hard to do when it's nearly dark. When I get too close, the fireflies fly away. Focusing, especially in the dark, is difficult--the autofocus hates the three-dimensional jungle of leaves in which the fireflies perch. And when I do take a picture, the chances are that the firefly is not blinking at that moment. The trick is to take lots and lots of pictures, day after day, and hope for the best. I'm still trying to get a better one.

My first attempt at photographing fireflies. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am excited to try again.

firefly restaurant in agana is closing down at the end of the month. this is your last chance to get their really good burger!

The lightning bugs showed up pretty late this season but it seems like there are so much more numerous than last year!

The crying and whimpering you hear during the vid is Silvio who was fingering his dress (figuratively speaking) because I wasn't paying attention to him. :)
