One day, almost unnoticed, I started saying to myself: The only way to be saved is to suffer.
I have no idea why I thought that. I mean literally - no idea. Just popped into my head.
I Googled it to see why those exact words landed on me. The first 3 results were bible verses: "If anyone's work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved--but only as through fire."
Interesting. Now I'm not a religious person (and this is not meant to be a religious post, but an academic/analytical one) but any text that talks about "work", "burned", "loss", "saved", and "fire" in the same sentence is speaking my poetic language.
- "If your work is burned up" - as artists, it happens all the time, metaphorically. We submit our cumulative efforts for judgment when we release what we've made, and in that submission, we lay bare and take it.
- "he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved" - the act of creating is the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, as it must be if we are to create something meaningful. It is release - letting of pieces of ourselves.
- "but only as through fire" - hardship and joy are the two things that connect the world. We mourn together, we rejoice together. Thus, they are the two things that connect us to ourselves. We mourn inside ourselves, over and over again, and when we find ourselves ready to keep going, we have a greater understanding of what makes us individual.
As in this image - sinking to save myself - I play with surrealism, texture, form, the sense of boiling skin and rough water. Sometimes we are saved by sinking. A cleansing. And when we emerge, we know something about ourselves that was previously hidden.

I had this idea a few weeks ago and went to the grocery store to find the right flower after looking through my neighborhood and not finding anything good. They were all so expensive, upwards of $30 for the ones I wanted, that I decided I wouldn't do it. I looked everywhere I went for a good enough flower...I needed something shaped enough like a "traditional" flower, and I also wanted one that had a little bulb-like shape on the end to place over the head portion of the subject. I finally went back to the grocery store and found a bunch for $3..much more reasonable :)
When I shot this I managed to get 2 other pictures finished that day, one other being a self-portrait with another flower theme...that one, however, was done clothed and I feel in my gut that it won't work, that any future "flower photos" need to be nude and really go along with the nature/natural theme. We will see!
I've just announced a new workshop being taught with Lindsay Adler in the desert near Los Angeles - Fashion & Fine Art Nudes!
Also, I'm hosting a meetup with Aaron Nace this Saturday in Chicago :)

The new 7-Day Creativity Challenge is finally open for registration and it's free! brookeshaden.com/events/impact.php
Let’s be honest, are any of us really sharing our art without any dream of how we might affect someone, even ourselves?
I remember the minutes before I uploaded my very first picture on Flickr 12 years ago, thinking, *wow, what an opportunity*. This is actually a recreation of one that I took 12 years ago almost to the day.
I wanted connection – so badly. I wanted to change people’s lives, even with the first picture I ever made. I wanted it all to mean something, ya know?
I’m guessing you show up for similar reasons. I see the collective heartbeat. We want to make a dent.
The free 7-day Creativity Challenge asks us to go deeper in our creativity, have greater impact, and make something new that really resonates. We’ll have 2 live sessions (recorded) + 7 daily emails with exercises that ask us to show up for that reason that we made our first piece of art. Let’s reconnect to ourselves and to each other.
And did I mention it’s free? And there’s a giveaway. And a chance to be featured. And so much room for growth. And I couldn’t be happier to do this with you. Let me know once you've signed up! Eeee!

Here's one from last year's fine art nude shoot with model Varga. A tattooed nymph, carrying herself graciously in the lake. Feeling adventurous, I turned this picture into a tinted oil painting thing.
Do check out the other photos I have taken of her.

See my website if interested in nude modeling in the greater Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula areas.
These images have been taken on the beautiful, secluded beaches and mystical forests of the Olympic Peninsula, Kitsap Peninsula, Seattle, Olympia, Tacoma, and the Pacific coast of Washington State.
All appropriate, mature, and respectful comments are appreciated. No images or coding in comments please. Do not invite my images to private, hidden, or award groups.
All models are at least 18 with documentation held by the photographer.
Artificial Intelligence: While all my images are processed using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, I do not use AI in any way other than what is built into some of the Ps & Lr tools. For example, you can argue that using the 'remove' tool in Ps/Lr is using AI. What I never do is use AI to create a model or to alter my models. The models in my images are all real humans and all having fun on their own terms. Why ruin that with AI? The image you see is what the camera saw with my own artistic efforts added. All artistic creativity is mine by intention... and I'm still a human (for now at least).

Varga as seen from behind as she's enjoying herself in the water. Just like a niad, you know, those water nymphs in Greek mythology.
Do check out the other photos I have taken of her.
I have been toying with different 'vine' concepts for well over a year now. This is a second attempt image. I've been making a point to not release any images that I am not completely happy with. Its been a refreshing to be able to step back, learn what went wrong, how I can redo it to better the image, and be able to take my time with it to make it perfect. There are a few different specific concepts I'm going to be working on as the weather warms up and summer starts to arrive here. There are definitely more vine images to come.

Inspired by Rammstein - Stripped
Obs >> There's nekkid people in this video as well ;P
Rammstein - Stripped
Come with me
Into the trees
We'll lay on the grass
And let hours pass
Take my hand
Come back to the land
Let's get away
Just for one day
Let me see you stripped
Let me see you stripped
Metropolis
Has nothing on this
You breathing in fumes
I taste when we kiss
Take my hand
Come back to the land
Where everything's ours
For a few hours
Let me see you stripped
Let me see you stripped
Let me hear you
Make decisions
Without your television
Let me hear you speaking
Just for me
