This was one of those paintings that I kept painting over and over. It started out as an abstract. Then I painted over the abstract and added two giraffes that looked as if they belonged in a child's nursery - not exactly the look I was going for.

Frustrated, I started scratching off some of the paint (the opposite of mark making - mark unmaking?), then painted over the original giraffes and scratched around some more. The next day I came back and added different giraffes and big bold black strokes on the left side just because I had no idea what else to do. Then I left it thinking I'd come back and paint over the whole shebang one more time.

But I didn't. It hung in my studio for a while until I realized it was exactly what it was meant to be.

Now, my favorite part of this painting is the story that comes next. I always listen to music when I paint. And one of the musicians on my favorite playlist is Larry Pattis. I'd friended Larry on Facebook one day (and completely fell in love with him and his wife, Karla - as much as I was in love with his music!). And one day he asked to buy this painting.

One day I hope to meet Larry and Karla face to face. Until then, I'm just chuffed as heck that they have my painting hanging in their house.

And that I have his music in my playlist to listen to whenever I paint.

Why I named this painting: Postcard from Harlem

I spent my summers as a kid on the steamy streets of New York City. Dive-bombing the unsuspecting below with seltzer water from our 6th-floor apartment. Eating what was then considered exotic Chinese food, daring my dad to try the sea cucumber. Grabbing slices of pizza from Sal and Carmine (still offering the best pizza in NYC) and eating them off a paper plate while I stood on the Broadway curb. After that, I'd head over to Columbus Avenue to knock off a couple chocolate Italian ices, before heading back to some side street of West End Avenue to join the neighborhood kids (mostly Puerto Rican) who were trying to cool off by jumping in and out of water blasting out from a fire hydrant.

This is a story about how I named this painting: Postcard – Orpheus on the B Train

As a kid, I loved taking the NYC subway. I still love it. But back in the day, it was magical. Except for this one trip with my Dad, when the train pulled up to the station and he disembarked - and I didn’t. Just as the doors had opened, a girl around my age (maybe 7) looked at me strangely, then deliberately turned her ice cream cone upside down and smashed it on top of my arm. I was too shocked to move and the doors shut with Dad trying frantically to get back in. There wasn’t anything to fear, I thought, right? Wrong.... sarahgilbertfox.com/postcard-orpheus-on-the-b-train/
