Federal Savings Lead to Financial Independence

An unexpected break in the cold weather arrived today with a high temperature of nearly 50 Fahrenheit. But when night arrived a weather system with subzero air, strong wind, and then several inches of snow to follow would test the wisdom of choosing the SE corner of the highway overpass. Prevailing wind and precipitation blows from the opposite side to the tent location, but it is exposed to the occasional Arctic air from the NE or East.

This place is a few miles north of the main homeless encampment on Heartside Park just south of Fulton Street and east of the Grand River's east bank. The advantage of camping with the others is some mutual support. But at the same time there is a possibility of being harmed by someone desperate there. However, police and social services from non-profits and from the county/city governments are not far away from that location. And only last week some emergency indoor nighttime shelter beds were offered.

Studying the GDP at the 30,000 foot altitude, USA is the richest country when you put that big number evenly spread across the known population. But the 1% of citizens who hold 25 or more per cent of the wealth leave 1 in 4 children malnourished physically; probably also marginalized emotionally, socially, medically, and educationally, too. A truer picture would use some sort of "Gross National Happiness" to measure the ranking of the USA by comparison to other social fabric in the world. By that measure a great many people here would rank far, far down the list.
