ONE!
365 self portraits, started 1/11/11 and completed today, 1/10/12.
This is the LAST ONE.
Three hundred and sixty-five days of taking pictures of myself and what did I learn? I learned very quickly that you really have to find ways to make your work interesting, appear relevant, maintain a unique timelessness and exude spirit and creativity.
I learned that even when you don’t feel like participating in a project you’ve committed to that you have to remain dedicated to completing it and doing so with the same enthusiasm and determination as the day you took it on. Sometimes that was very difficult for me and so I would try to put a different spin on it. I’d adopt a specific theme, such as “Faceless June” in which all the photos snapped hid my face from the camera or “B&W July” where all the photos taken were, of course, in black and white. I did this just to keep it challenging for me and interesting to the viewer.
I learned that iPhones take fantastic pictures. They really do. And that, with the help of iPhoto on your Macbook Pro and some really terrific smartphone apps like Phototreats, Hipstamatic, Instagram, Photo Timer, Quick Lomo Pro, RetroCamera and BeFunkyPro, anyone can take a relatively simple image and manipulate and style it in unique and different ways to make it something really significant. Cheating? Perhaps. Do I care? Not!
I learned that it’s okay to open yourself up and let people into your soul, if even through your eyes, so that they can have a better understanding of the person you are and what inspires you, moves you, thrills you, challenges you, teaches you, intrigues you, excites you, captivates you, enthralls you, touches you, speaks to you, grips you, holds you, finds you.
I learned that some people may think a certain way about you for even taking on such a self-centered, vain, perhaps even narcissistic project like a full year of pictures of yourself. My word! But, I also learned that it really doesn’t matter what people think about me or the photos I’ve taken of me and that it’s really all just subjective and everyone can believe or think what they may. What matters is your purpose, your reason for doing something you want to do and carrying it out and seeing it through.
I also learned...
- I really like Starbucks Coffee a lot.
- I like to wear sunglasses way too much.
- I don't spend nearly enough time as I should with my dog.
- I allow setbacks, big and small, to really cloud my judgment and take away my focus.
- I own a lot of black shirts.
- I own a lot of white shirts.
- I have a lot of hair.
- I already knew this but it really became much more apparent: I'm really insecure.
- I'm brave for stating that I'm insecure.
- Ultimately, I do care what people think.
