I spent a good deal of the day cleaning out our filing cabinets, which I don't think I've done since I STARTED them 8 or 9 years ago.
Aside from all the dental records and tax returns, it was fun to see what things I considered savable over the years. The receipt for Erick's Taylor and one for the time we took Swing Dance lessons together. Letters from the girls I counseled at summer camp. The check registrar from our first married year - all those great shops on our Irish honeymoon, all those bounced checks waiting for us when we returned home! Recipes from my MIL that I thought I'd lost. Thank you notes that we'd received from our worship and dance ministries over the years. Cards from friends (and one from Susan saying "Remember the flea" which of course, I cannot remember!)
I've always felt like a nomad my entire life, not ever feeling rooted to any one group or community. But in these folders, I find my roots in my experiences and the people who I've been blessed to call friends in each of the seasons of my life. Because this filing cabinet and these memories go with me, wherever I go.
