Filer Creek, a tributary of the Toba River, is ringed with step granite walls as it drains the Compton Neve. This shot shows the western divide of Filer Creek with Klite River drainage behind, the Tahumming in the distance, Portal Peak at right and Headwall Creek valley partially visible at far right. Title: "Nicholson File Works"

Accession #: 2003-55-1-2792

Part Of: Ken MacPherson Fonds

Description: B&W postcard featuring a view of Nicholson File Factory. Taken by William Williamson, from west of Cavan Street, c. 1890.

History: G. Outram & Sons proposed in 1888 the development of a metal file factory in Port Hope that would employ 50 men. The factory, originally called the Globe File Manufacturing Company ran off the power of the Ganaraska river near Dr. Corbett's electrical company. It continued in operation well into the 20th Century as the Nicholson File Factory, on Cavan St.

Barrington, Rhode Island

My plan for today's photo was to stop at a farm stand on the Barrington Parkway. First, I need some native corn, and second, the setting is great for a photo. There was only one problem. The farm stand wasn't open when I went there. Now with the clock ticking - I only have a limited amount of time for lunch - I needed a backup location in a hurry. Knowing there would be a lot of people enjoying today's weather, I continued down 114 to the East Bay Bike Path. I like this little section because of the wooden fence and background woodlands, so I composed my shot and waited. It only took a couple of minutes for some bikers to pass through the scene, and it's exactly the type shot I had in mind. I may have to try this setting again with a slightly wider angle and a much slower shutter speed. The same background with some blurred motion could prove interesting.

Post processing started with a detail light filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, protect highlights, contrast, and adaptive saturation. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

has been so great. i can change up what they do every day. the boys can SEE when they are done. besides language arts and math in the folders, sometimes the boys will find mazes, tangram cards, show and tell prompts, "run around the house 3 times", art projects, research projects, and many other things. i fill up the folders every night or first thing in the morning. this system has truly been a blessing to our schooling at home.
