There seems to be a short window for when these fiddleheads are on display... caught a few this week!
I really don’t know what this is. It’s a class of plants I know little about, although I know a few species.
Fiddlehead ferns are a real Challenge to capture the slightest wind or in this case a fly creating movement yep the fly is in the shot. The whole process took about an hour and the fly stayed on the fern until the end.

I've always wanted to shoot one of these but I've always seemed to miss them. This year I checked everyday for them and finally with the warm weather they are popping up all over the place!
I decided to go with b&w because the green color of the plant just didn't work well with the brownish background so I thought a dramatic b&w would be better.
I think this is an indigenous Hapuu fern, but I'm still working on the ID. Any fern savvy folks out there?

Its primary range extends from the Channel Islands and Los Angeles County northward throughout cismontane California, Oregon, and Washington, to Vancouver Island (Georgia Straits) and southwestern British Columbia mostly south of 50Ëš north latitude. OK, my ferns do not produce the pretty Golden Ratio spirals that I love to see in other photos. So I use what I have.

This scene caught my eye during a recent hike for wildflowers. I have always liked the look of the fiddleheads.
Get 'em now!!! They're only in season for a short while in New England!!
FIRST...go here to find out how to trim and clean fiddleheads. IT'S IMPORTANT!!
RECIPE (for above):
1 pound fresh fiddleheads
1/4 cup butter
2 shallots, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon coriander
salt
pepper
Steam (or blanch) fiddleheads just until tender. Meanwhile, heat butter in a heavy frying pan and sauté shallots until softened and translucent.
Add coriander.
Add steamed fiddleheads, turning to coat them well in the sauce. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve at once.
