Wikipedia: The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 epic war film directed by David Lean and based on the 1952 novel written by Pierre Boulle. Although the film uses the historical setting of the construction of the Burma Railway in 1942–1943, the plot and characters of Boulle's novel and the screenplay are almost entirely fictional. The cast includes William Holden, Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, and Sessue Hayakawa.

The conditions to which POW and civilian laborers were subjected were far worse than the film depicted. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission:

The notorious Burma-Siam railway, built by Commonwealth, Dutch and American prisoners of war, was a Japanese project driven by the need for improved communications to support the large Japanese army in Burma. During its construction, approximately 13,000 prisoners of war died and were buried along the railway. An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 civilians also died in the course of the project, chiefly forced labor brought from Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, or conscripted in Siam (Thailand) and Burma. Two labor forces, one based in Siam and the other in Burma, worked from opposite ends of the line towards the center.

The arched sections are original (constructed by Japan during WWII); the two sections with trapezoidal trusses were built by Japan after the war as war reparations, replacing sections destroyed by Allied aircraft.

The fictional Calton Creek (Calton is a district of Glasgow) was an outpost of the wild west, supposedly located somewhere in Arizona, but its inhabitants were all Glaswegians from the Calton area and spoke with Glasgow accents. "Lobey Dosser" was the pint-sized, whiskered Sheriff of Calton Creek who, assisted by "El Fideldo" (Elfie), his resourceful two-legged horse, strove to maintain law and order and protect the citizens against the evil plans of "Rank Bajin" ("rank bad yin/one"). The character names drew heavily on the Glasgow vernacular and were often only comprehensible to Glaswegians.

“For Cervantes and the readers of his day, Don Quixote was a one-volume book published in 1605, divided internally into four parts, not the first part of a two-part set. The mention in the 1605 book of further adventures yet to be told was totally conventional, does not indicate any authorial plans for a continuation, and was not taken seriously by the book's first readers.

Alonso Quixano, the protagonist of the novel (though he is not given this name until much later in the book), is a hidalgo (member of the lesser Spanish nobility), nearing 50 years of age, living in an unnamed section of La Mancha with his niece and housekeeper, as well as a stable boy who is never heard of again after the first chapter. Although Quixano is usually a rational man, in keeping with the humoral physiology theory of the time, not sleeping adequately—because he was reading—has caused his brain to dry. Quixano's temperament is thus choleric, the hot and dry humor. As a result, he is easily given to anger and believes every word of some of these fictional books of chivalry to be true such were the "complicated conceits"; "what Aristotle himself could not have made out or extracted had he come to life again for that special purpose.

Sancho Panza is a fictional character in the novel Don Quixote written by Spanish author Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in 1605. Sancho acts as squire to Don Quixote and provides comments throughout the novel, known as sanchismos, that are a combination of broad humour, ironic Spanish proverbs, and earthy wit. "Panza" in Spanish means "belly".

Sancho is illiterate and proud of it but by influence of his new master, he develops considerable knowledge about some books.

Sancho Panza represents, among other things, the quintessentially Spanish brand of skepticism of the period.".

A fictional conversation of twins in their mother's womb.

Do you believe in life after childbirth?

- Certainly. There must be something after the birth.

This is nonsense, there is no life after childbirth. What could he look like?

- I don't know, but there will definitely be more light than here. Maybe we'll run on our own and eat with our mouths.

Well, that's nonsense! You can't run. And eating with your mouth is completely ridiculous! We are fed by the umbilical cord. Let me tell you something: Life after childbirth is out of the question - the umbilical cord is already too short.

- No, there will definitely be something. It's just that everything will be a little different than we're used to here.

But no one returned from there after the birth. Life simply ends with childbirth. And in general, life is nothing but a lingering crampedness in the dark.

- Well, I don't know exactly what it will look like after giving birth, but we'll see our mom anyway and she'll take care of us.

Mum? Do you believe in mom? And where do you think she should be?

- Well, all around us! We wouldn't be without her at all.

I do not believe this! I've never seen a mom, so it's clear there isn't one.

- But sometimes, when we are silent, we can hear she singing or feel him caressing our world...

It's the same old theme, since 1916

In your head, in your head they're still fighting

With their tanks, and their bombs, and their bombs, and their guns

In your head, in your head they are dying...!

Quasimodo is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) by Victor Hugo. Quasimodo was born with a hunchback and feared by the townspeople as a sort of monster, but he finds sanctuary in an unlikely love that is fulfilled only in death.

The novel sought to preserve values of French culture in a time period of great change, which resulted in the destruction of many French Gothic structures and threatened to trivialise the vibrancy of 15th century France. The novel made Notre-Dame de Paris a national icon and served as a catalyst into a renewed interest in the restoration of Gothic form.

Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote abundantly in an exceptional variety of genres: lyrics, satires, epics, philosophical poems, epigrams, novels, history, critical essays, political speeches, funeral orations, diaries, letters public and private, as well as dramas in verse and prose. Skynet is a fictional artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general superintelligence system that serves as the antagonistic force of the Terminator Movie franchise.

In the first film, it is stated that Skynet was created by Cyberdyne Systems for SAC-NORAD. When Skynet gained self-awareness, humans tried to deactivate it, prompting it to retaliate with a nuclear attack, an event which humankind in (or from) the future refers to as Judgment Day. From that point forward mankind was at war with the machines. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

Chateau Village is a closed community sim with theme set on a fictional Island nearby India. It is fully inspired by a blend of antic temples ruins and the colonial homes of the British residents. Island carries a history in itself, painted through the ruins of water gardens that stood there for centuries before the residents, populated by the numerous birds and various flowers. Ones that stand our are surely the everyone's favorite Peacocks and the always stunning Lotus flower.

except the Water gardens, villagers have their luxury lives settled in the calm of the island, away from the busy continent yet close enough to have everything on their doorstep, through the busy market and its Aviary. Every Sunday the boats arrive with the market vendors, offering foods, spices, crafts and numerous arts for the residents to enjoy while never leaving the heated calm of their home island.

If one listens well, you can hear the busy market vendors talking, you can hear the winds breaking against the cliffs and the little birds singing to the morning sun.

Gaillardia

Genus of flowering plants

For the fictional British island colony, see Carlton-Browne of the F.O.

Gaillardia /ɡeɪˈlɑːrdiə/ (common name blanket flower) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to North and South America. It was named after Maître Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th-century French magistrate who was an enthusiastic botanist. The common name may refer to the resemblance of the inflorescence to the brightly patterned blankets made by Native Americans, or to the ability of wild taxa to blanket the ground with colonies. Many cultivars have been bred for ornamental use.

Quick Facts Scientific classification, Synonyms ...

Description

Cultivated Gaillardia in Gahkuch, Pakistan.

These are annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, sometimes with rhizomes. The stem is usually branching and erect to a maximum height around 80 centimeters (31.5 inches). The leaves are alternately arranged. Some taxa have only basal leaves. They vary in shape. They are glandular in most species. The inflorescence is a solitary flower head. The head can have 15 or more ray florets, while some taxa lack any ray florets. They can be almost any shade of yellow, orange, red, purplish, brown, white, or bicolored. They are sometimes rolled into a funnel shape. There are many tubular disc florets at the center of the head in a similar range of colors, and usually tipped with hairs. The fruit usually has a pappus of scales.

Ecology

Gaillardia species are used as food plants by the caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species, including Schinia bina (which has been recorded on G. pulchella), Schinia masoni (which feeds exclusively on G. aristata) and Schinia volupia (which feeds exclusively on G. pulchella).

The Headless Horseman is a fictional character from the short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by American author Washington Irving. The story, from Irving's collection of short stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., has worked itself into known American folklore/legend through literature and film. It is generally about a Headless Horseman.

The Headless Horseman has appeared in many forms of literature throughout history and throughout the world. Many countries have their own unique version of the legend in which some form of the headless horseman appears. In the United States, various states have their own version of a headless horseman tale.

The more noted and recognizable Headless Horseman of today imitates the one that appears in Washington Irving's short story, which was published in 1819, along with 34 other of Irving's essays. The story is set in New York, within a 1790s Dutch settlement that residents nicknamed “Sleepy Hollow”. Its protagonist is a schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane, whose unknown final fate results from a meeting with the horseman.

The horseman himself is allegedly a Hessian soldier from the American Revolutionary War who was decapitated by a cannonball and now roams Sleepy Hollow on the back of his horse, with his severed head resting upon the pommel of his saddle. He is therefore also called the 'Galloping Hessian'. The Horseman is said to be incapable of crossing the bridge at the town entrance (a possible reference to the belief that ghosts cannot cross water), although he is shown throwing his head across a river to strike down Ichabod Crane. Ichabod's fate is left ambiguous; some of the background characters allege that he has been "carried off" by the Horseman, while others suggest that Ichabod was still alive, that he had been frightened out of the county by the ghost (and by the prospect of facing his bad-tempered landlord) and was pursuing a successful legal career in a distant part of New York (in the Disney animated film, he is supposed to have married a wealthy widow).

It is implied later that the Horseman was in fact Brom Bones, Ichabod's rival for the hand in marriage of the local beauty Katrina van Tassel, who imitated the legend of the Galloping Hessian on purpose to frighten and chase away his rival. The fact that a shattered pumpkin is found beside Ichabod's abandoned hat supports this, in that the pumpkin may easily have been used to simulate the Horseman's severed head. Intriguingly, there is no mention of a severed head in the story heard by Ichabod, though it is prominent in his own encounter with the horseman.

Other adaptations include collections of short horror stories such as The Headless Horseman: And Other Ghoulish Tales, poems such as The Headless Horseman Rides Tonight: More Poems to Trouble Your Sleep, and even plays such as The Mystery of the Headless Horseman. In A Hollow Sleep by Chris Ebert, the Horseman is given an identity of "Heinrich Luneberg" and his origins explored. The story is told from his perspective (appearing in the book Ophelia and Other Weird Tales).

The Headless Horseman is also a novel by Mayne Reid written in 1865 or 1866 and is based on the author's adventures in the United States.
