"Have you seen it?" would have been a stupid question, but I had to bite my tongue to keep from asking it, I was so impatient to know what she thought about it all.
"Yes, the planet Moon has come still closer," Sibyl said, before I had asked her anything, "the phenomenon was foreseen."
I felt a bit relieved. "Do you foresee that it'll move away again?" I asked.
Sibyl still had one eyelid half closed, peering into the telescope. "No," she said, "it won't move away any more."

These photos are failures from a strictly technical standpoint: a tripod (which I didn't have at the time) is required for really good photos of fireworks displays; I decided to steady my camera as much as possible, and hope for the best—one or two might turn out. They did turn out, in fact, but not in the way I was hoping. The photographs in this set are as imperfect as they are perfect, and reveal an unexpected beauty in the night sky that is truly captivating in a way that's difficult to describe.
I decided to pair each photo with a passage from one of Calvino's Cosmicomic stories, many of which are recounted by Qfwfq, an omnipresent, timeless, protean narrator. Each Cosmicomic story is fun, compelling, and extremely inventive, while presenting a version of reality that is completely obvious and (un)commonplace.

I did my first show of the main UK firework season last Friday and now I've got an insanely busy couple of weeks ahead. Three days at work on the day job, and then four firework shows on the trot... back to the day job for a week and then another show to follow...
I'm posting these pyro shots to help us all get into the mood.

The Basel fireworks over the Rhine river on July 31, seen from a small french hill about 10km from the city - note that the red glare over the valley is not a cloud - it's smog, a typical accumulation of polluted air that is common when there is not enough wind.

There was no longer any way to establish a point of reference: the Galaxy went on turning but I could no longer count the revolutions, any point could be the point of my departure, any sign heaped up with the others could be mine, but discovering it would have served no purpose, because it was clear that, independent of signs, space didn't exist and perhaps never had existed.
